The legendary Devil’s Mill (Teufelsmühle)
Starting in the centre of Aldrans, the path that leads to the village of Rinn takes walkers in around 45 minutes past the Devil’s Mill. According to legend, it was built by a local farmer with the help of the devil himself. It is said that the farmer did not have enough money to build a new mill, and therefore he entered a pact with the devil.
The latter agreed to build the mill for the farmer, but the price for this service would be the farmer’s soul. The farmer agreed on one condition – the mill had to be completed in one single night before the first cock’s crow. Satan agreed to this condition and set to work. In just a few hours he had finished building the mill. All that was missing was the large millstone that he had to haul up from the Inn Valley.
As the devil was passing the Herzsee lake, the first “cock-a-doodle-doo” resounded from a nearby farm. Overfilled with rage the devil hurled the millstone down into the valley where it shattered into a thousand pieces. The farmer was naturally delighted and he named his new property “Devil’s Mill” after its demonic builder.
