Ampass & Culture

A romantic wedding setting
The two towers of Ampass Parish Church can be seen from afar as you approach the little village from the east. Dedicated to John the Baptist, the church is enthroned on a small hill above the village, surrounded by delightful meadows. Owing to its exceptionally idyllic location, it is one of the most popular churches in the region for weddings.
Ampass, however, boasts not just one, but two churches. The Gothic “Veitskirche” church in the village centre is also well worth a visit. It was built by carters who carried salt from the nearby town of Hall to Italy. Bearing witness to the past are the prayers of intercession that, even today, are still offered in this church for the carters.
The plague column in Ampass, which can also be seen on the village’s coat of arms, is a memorial not to be missed. It is the most significant Gothic wayside shrine in North Tyrol.
