The Tyrol Easter Festival
23rd March until 8th April, 2012
Power and Freedom
From 23 March until 8 April 2012, the 24th edition of the Tyrol Easter Festival is scheduled to take place in numerous locations at Innsbruck and Hall, featuring once again an extensive programme with music of all eras from all around the globe, dance performances, plays, films and philosophical discussions. Initiated and promoted by Galerie St. Barbara, each year the festival’s organizing team choses a theme that focuses on the current aspirations, visions and fears of mankind. The 2012 event titled ‘Macht.frei \ Leben’, is set to explore the many aspects and concepts of liberty and freedom.
Throughout the season of Lent until the eve of Easter Sunday, performances will be held in churches, public spaces and community halls at both Tyrolean towns as well as various additional locations in the region. The scope of events ranges from classical sacred music to orchestra concerts as well as traditional and contemporary compositions, which despite being commissioned for religious purposes pay tribute to each era’s secular background. Performances by modern, international dance companies have become a firm fixture in the festival programme - alongside numerous round table discussions with leading experts in the field of economics, sociology and philosophy as well as a wide range of in-depth introductory talks on the individual events.
The event’s musical programme will once again focus on contemporary and early music with an intriguing blend of works inclluding the Credo by Arvo Pärt, pieces written by Tyrolean composer Werner Pirchner and performed by the Tyrolean Youth Orchestra, Johannes Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion presented by the Orchestra of the 18th Century under conductor Frans Brüggen, works by Swiss composer Klaus Huber as well as rarely performed passion music by Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger. Dance ensembles from Japan, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland will round off this year’s festival programme.
The core message of the Tyrol Easter Festival is to promote self-reflection and explore the inner self in tribute to the significance of Easter - which may well be the reason for rendering the event a truly unique and inspirational experience.
