Winter Holidays in St. Sigmund - Praxmar
In the kingdom of the snow queen
Snow reliable? This question causes little more than a chuckle among the locals here in St. Sigmund-Praxmar. Winter here lasts at least 6 months - from November right through until the beginning of May, snow plays a permanent part in daily life, which is why St. Sigmund-Praxmar is renowned as one of the Tyrol’s finest backcountry skiing areas. Particularly alluring is the 3,298 metre-high Lüsener Fernerkogel, a mountain that is considered a true test of ability among backcountry ski enthusiasts owing to its arduous ascent. The climbs up to the Zischgeles (3,005 m) or the Lampenspitze (2,867 m) mountains are somewhat easier.
The slopes of the Lampenspitze are also where you can discover Austria’s first themed backcountry skiing trail which comprises an interactive online educational and tour-planning module, combined with interesting information boards along the ascent route. If you’ve always fancied trying this “back-to-nature” sport, then you can join in one of the backcountry skiing “taster courses” that are available.
Set in the midst of pristine natural surroundings, St. Sigmund-Praxmar is an equally ideal “base camp” for those who enjoy snowshoeing. Beginners are recommended to join in one of the free, guided snowshoe hikes before setting off on their own.
Interactive ski map including snow report, lift opening times, slopes, toboggan runs, ice skating rinks, cross country tracks and winter hiking trails. Ski bus stops and restaurants.
