Völs & Culture

On the trail of history
A sharpened stone axe dating back to the third millennium BC is the oldest relic to have been found in the municipality of Völs. An urn cemetery dating back to the Bronze Age and countless coins from early Roman times bear witness to early historical settlements in Völs.

Particularly notable is the “Völser Bacchus” that was discovered in 1999 during restoration work on the old parish church in Völs. The little bust of Bacchus, the God of festivity and wine, was originally a weight belonging to a Roman set of scales – a bronze figure of outstanding artistic quality. A visit to the Thurnfels Museum situated in the local council building is well worthwhile, not only on account of the “Völser Bacchus”, but also due to the many other interesting artefacts on display.

The Pilgrimage Church of St. Blasius

Enthroned high above the community hall to the south-west of the original village centre and visible from far away, the church dedicated to St. Blasius is, today, still the town’s main landmark
