23 until 26.07.2009: Innsbruck’s New Orleans jazz festival
In addition to being the cradle of jazz music, New Orleans is also one of Innsbruck’s partner cities.
One of the most fun characteristic of this alliance is the annual New Orleans jazz festival, bringing to Innsbruck the summer feeling of the Mississippi delta metropolis. People will gather at Innsbruck’s market square to join the rhythm of the American South. The vibrant live performances by the stars of today’s New Orleans music scene express the city’s current sound, based on New Orleans jazz, rhythm and blues and zydeco, - and remind of such outstanding musicians as Louis Armstrong, Sydney Bechet, Fats Domino and Mahalia Jackson.
But as Markus Linder, the organizer of the festival is of the opinion that not only the shores of the Mississippi but also those of the river Inn can be home to musicians with a feel for the swing, also local bands are invited and he himself – an avid keyboarder - will take to the stage. It happens that performances turn into proper jam sessions with members of different bands merging happily into new formations, much appreciated by the audience and certainly conducive to harmonious city partnership.
