In the Tyrolean Oberland on the Mieminger Plateau stands a rather inconspicuous mountain. The Simmering is quite detached and therefore offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and far into the Inn Valley. The Simmering Alm and the summit, which is not far from there, make for a nice combination tour. It is already the end of March, but the mountains attract with a lot of snow and finest conditions. So, sled and snowshoes packed and I was on my way!

OBSTEIG

Our starting point is Obsteig, or rather the district Finsterfiecht. The community of Obsteig is very easy to reach with the VVT bus 4176 from Innsbruck main station. From the bus stop Obsteig Mooswaldsiedlung you walk well signposted to the former Grünberglift. If you come by car, you will find free parking directly at the Grünwald lift. The former ski slope is unmistakable and also the start up to the Simmering Alm. Next to the slope the toboggan run leads up. Allow about two hours for the ascent from here.

WAY TO THE SIMMERING ALP

After the first ascent you come to a small plateau, the Zwischensimmering. Here it becomes relatively flat, past a beautiful hut to a fork in the path. Turn left up to the Grünberg and right to the Simmering Alm. From here it goes up again more steeply and over several hairpin bends through the forest. Since the ascent is also the toboggan run and partly not very wide, be absolutely careful.

After eight hairpin bends you can see the Simmering Alm in front of you and you also come directly out of the forest above the forest line. At the last hairpin bend you can already see the summit cross. Once you arrive at the alpine pasture, you can enjoy the beautiful view and take a break.

SIMMERING ALM

After about 2 hours you have reached the Simmering Alm at 1,820 meters. The Alm currently offers takeaways and has set up an area at a prescribed distance of 50 metres from the hut where you can consume drinks and food at a distance. Two fire bowls set into the ground provide warmth on very cold days. The hut is open every day except Monday. The toboggans can be borrowed free of charge, so you don't have to carry your own toboggan.

The Alm spoils you with food from its own production and a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. The small chapel is worth seeing in front of the imposing mountain ranges.

A special feature is the breeding of Zwergzebu cattle, which produce a particularly delicious meat. You can find the cattle in the summer on the alp and you can also try the excellent goulash. Highly recommended!

SIMMERING

The more athletic among us can now put on their snowshoes and continue hiking to the summit of the Simmering. Past the alpine pasture, you walk a little further until you come to the ridge of the mountain, which is clearly visible. From there, you go up via a weather cross to the summit at 2,096 metres. Always staying on the very wide ridge, the avalanche danger here is extremely low and due to the moderately steep ascent ideal for a short snowshoe tour. Plan about an hour's walk from the alpine pasture.

The summit offers, as I mentioned at the beginning, due to the free-standing location between Inntal, Gurgltal and above the Mieminger Plateau a brilliant distant view. One sees in the Inntal up to the Glungezer. All around you can see the Mieminger chain, the Stubai Alps opposite with the Pirchkogel in the Kühtai, the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Ötztal and, following the ridge to the west, the Tschirgant above Imst.

If you can't make it to the summit, you can also just walk to another summit cross halfway up.

The way back is either via the ascent route or southeast of the summit over hilly terrain directly to the Simmering Alm.

TOBOGGANING FUN INTO THE VALLEY

Very deserved it goes now with the toboggan down into the valley. The well-prepared toboggan run is very long and offers an extensive fun factor over a length of 6.5 kilometres. Please note that you may be met by people walking uphill at any time. There is no lighting, so be sure to descend to the valley in good time. At Zwischensimmering there is a short flat section, which you can easily master with a well dragged toboggan without getting off. The toboggan run is one of the longest in Tyrol.

CONCLUSION

A beautiful alp with a wonderful view. Toboggans can be rented free of charge and the toboggan run is one of the longest in Tyrol and offers a lot of fun. The ascent of two hours is definitely worth it. The sporty ones combine it with the one-hour snowshoe tour to the summit of the Simmering, which adds to the view. The toboggan run is also passable now at the end of March down to the valley and super prepared thanks to the many fresh snow.
