Winter yes, skiing no? Then how about a snowshoe hike? In my opinion, a vastly underestimated winter sport that offers a good middle ground between a walk and more strenuous sports. What's especially nice about it is that you can find your own paths and quickly discover new things. Snowshoe hikes are a good choice especially on days when it snows a lot, but also a few days after the last snowfall, when the foehn has already let the top layer of snow sink, the round between Kreith in Mutters and Telfes in the Stubaital is a real pleasure.

OFF YOU GO!

Together with Marika I set off on a sunny Friday. In the city we meet in the Stubaitalbahn, which first goes from the train station through the old town before it starts its way into the Stubaital. It's a leisurely ride, enjoying the views of Innsbruck and the Nordkette. First slow down, before it really gets going at Kreith station.

As suspected, there is not enough snow for the snowshoes on the first part of the hike. The hiking trail is visibly cleared and is therefore also recommended for winter hikers. Grödel - or micro spikes - are a helpful accessory here for the sometimes icy spots along the way.

Shortly after the Telfer Wiesen station, we decide to put on our snowshoes and walk across the snow-covered fields. A little further up we even come across tracks of other snowshoe hikers. Everything was done right!

SIMPLE ROUND WITH DISTANT VIEW

In total, there are around eight kilometres and 270 metres of altitude difference that you cover on the loop over the Stockerhof. The view of the Stubaital is particularly beautiful, but also of the small, snow-covered wooden huts. The larches themselves are completely bare in winter, but they provide a view of the mountains.

FROM STOCKERHOF TO KREITH

The Stockerhof is famous for its freshly made schnitzel, but unfortunately it is closed at the moment. So we eat our snack in the sun in front of the farm. Then we take the somewhat steeper path back to Kreith.

With snowshoes, the slight incline is really fun and there is also considerably more snow in the shady valley than on the sunny south-facing slopes of the Telfer meadows.

Cross the stream once more and we are already back at Kreith station, from where a train runs back to town every 30 minutes. By car, the hike would also be well doable, but suitable parking spaces in Kreith are scarce, it is easier to start the tour then in Telfes.

DIRECTIONS

You can find the round hike here. If you prefer to walk from A to B instead of a loop, it's best to start in Telfes and hike via Stockerhof to Kreith. You can findthe hike description with GPX here.

In total we were on the way for about 3 hours and needed 2-2.5 hours for the way through the snow.

SNOWSHOEING EQUIPMENT

Snowshoes can be borrowed in Innsbruck, for example, at Die Börse (particularly practical: the Stubaitalbahn leaves directly opposite on the other side of the Triumphpforte). Apart from snowshoes, poles are extremely helpful when hiking on large soles. By the way, since the foot is not rolled like normal, you will freeze faster in snowshoes - thick socks are worth their weight in gold. In general, it pays off to wear an onion look and perhaps pack an extra layer.

Tip: Since it is possible that you will walk the lower part of this circular hike without snowshoes, it makes sense to consider beforehand how to mount the snowshoes firmly on the backpack.
