The Lüsener Fernerkogel is a very impressive mountain. With its impressive 3,298 metres, it towers at the head of the Lüsener Gletschertal valley and is the dominant scenic feature of today's winter hike.

ALPINE INN LÜSENS

The Alpengasthof Lüsens is our starting point for the winter hiking trail to the Fernerboden. A pay parking lot with plenty of parking spaces is available here. The day ticket costs four euros. You can get to Lüsens from Innsbruck via the A12 to Kematen and then via the Sellraintal to Gries. From there follow the signs to the Lüsens Glacier Valley. By public transport you can take the VVT line 4166 to Praxmar. From there you can get to Lüsens via another winter hiking trail, which I have written about. If you want to walk a little further, you can combine both trails.

ON THE GLACIER TRAIL TO FERNERBODEN

The winter hiking trail leads directly from the car park towards the end of the valley and is well signposted. The well-prepared trail also serves as a skating track for the cross-country ski trail, but is very wide and therefore has room for both hikers and cross-country skiers. The first few metres are uphill to a hilltop from where you have a beautiful view of the alpine inn and the valley. After that, the trail continues practically flat until it reaches its destination. The stream flowing through untouched snowy landscapes provides a pleasant background noise.

Without any real effort, the hiking trail leads further in to the foot of the Fernerkogel. To the left and right there are great photo opportunities of the high alpine, snowy backdrop. You will also find some large icy waterfalls among the rugged rocks. We pass by the material cable car that leads to the Westfalenhaus until we come to a small shrine, which can be photographed as a very beautiful motif with the Lüsener Fernerkogel. The hike then continues to a hut, a youth hostel. There you can have a short rest and then go back the same way. The winter hiking trail can also be visited as a glacier trail in summer. However, the signs are hardly visible in winter due to the abundance of snow.
