Pilgrimage Church of St Peter's and Paul

Description

Pilgrimage Church of St Peter and St Paul in Götzens

This parish church is one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in the southern German-speaking regions and dates back to the years 1772–1775. The church interior is full of impressive décor in the form of painted frescos and stucco work, some of which is gold plated. The church gives the illusion of depth and is a prime example of the theatre architecture of the Baroque style, with all five altars visible the moment you enter the building. Both the church and its cemetery are protected monuments.

The priest and martyr Otto Neururer worked at the church between 1932 and 1938. He was also buried at the church after being imprisoned and executed at Buchenwald Concentration Camp in 1940. In 2015, a relief panel was installed in front of the church to commemorate his work. The church's "Peace Bell" was also named after him.

The church is not only a place of pilgrimage in religious terms but also for music fans: it is used as a venue for concerts practically year round and impresses both visitors and musicians with its extraordinary acoustics.

Other special highlights well worth a visit include:
The nativity scene, from the beginning of December to the beginning of February (Candlemas)
The Passion crib with more than 250 figurines, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday
The Easter grave, from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday
