Forecast

An area of low pressure is spreading over Central Europe and we are under its influence, unfortunately. We will therefore see changing, but mostly dense cloud with occasional showers.

Tendency

Behind today’s weather fronts, the airflow will quickly swing to the south and bring us once again warm, subtropical air masses. Under the influence of foehn winds, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be warm.

6.6 KM 6.6 KM

This hike starts behind the Pfaffenhofer Alm mountain hut (=Widdersbergalm) and zigzags ever higher up the mountain. After about 45 minutes, you will come to a turnoff. Follow the signs towards Sonnkarköpfl. Once the trail leaves the forest, it continues over barren terrain, first on a north-facing slope and later through a corrie on a south-western slope up to the summit. From the Sonnkarköpfl peak, hike back the same way until you reach the turnoff that leads east to the "Oberhofer Melkalm". This section takes you downhill over vast fields of alpine roses to the Sonnkarhütte mountain hut (not open to the public) and then over alpine meadows to the Oberhofer Melkalm mountain hut. Finally, take the Bettlersteig trail that starts behind the hut and follow it back to the starting point at the Pfaffenhofer Alm mountain hut (=Widdersbergalm). Tips | notes: It is possible to get a driving permit (fees apply) from the local authority in Pfaffenhofen. This saves you about 2.5 hours of walking time. The journey is possible in a normal car. Please note: after heavy rainfall, the road is difficult to drive and an all-terrain vehicle is recommended.

A beautiful circular hike in the Senders Valley (Sendertal). The hike starts at Kaserl car park in the Senders Valley and leads up to the idyllic Salfeinssee biotope, where you can admire stunning reflections of the mighty Kalkkögel mountain range on nice summer days. The highlight of this circular hike, however, is the way the route passes along the mountain ridge via Grieskogel, Breitschwemmkogel and Angerbergkopf to Schaflegerkogel and Kreuzjoch before heading down the back of the Senders Valley to the Kemater Alm mountain hut (the only refreshment stop along the way). The hike then follows the Sendersweg path back to the starting point in Kaserl. Hikers must be sure-footed and in good physical shape.  Arrival by car: Take the Senderstal forest road (toll road, fee for cars € 3) directly to the Kaserl car park (free of charge) or the Kemater Alm car park (free of charge).

Hike past the barrier and along the forest road to the Inzinger Alm mountain hut. From there, continue a little further along the forest road before turning left onto a narrow mountain path that leads uphill and is steep in places. The route leads you up a steep slope into a large basin with a hunting lodge. Another steep slope then takes you to a trail that runs along the river to the Hundstalsee lake. On the far shore of the turquoise mountain lake lies the "Apollontempel" (Temple of Apollo), a place of power made using raw rock from the area. This work of art was created without using any binding agent by the artists Robert Tribus and Hinz Triendl and it took 20 years to build.

After walking north for a few minutes, you pass a small power station and come to the start of the path that runs through the Zimmerberg Gorge. The path leads along the stream for most of the way and comes to a rest area with a table and benches. The route leads over small bridges and up impressive wooden steps that zigzag along the cliff face before later crossing a 30-metre-long steel cable suspension bridge over the Griesbach.  After a few metres, you’ll come to a wide forest road. From there, follow the signs towards Lehen. The route leads gently downhill and then branches off to the right into the forest. The path soon turns into a gravel road and then finally a paved road just before Lehen. Walk past the first houses and continue down into the valley towards the "Sonnensiedlung" district. At the fork in the road above the Sonnensiedlung district, turn right and continue straight on until you reach "Am Sonnenberg" a few minutes later. Once there, take a sharp left to head south and then turn onto the second side road. At the end of the side road, a small path leads back down to the starting point. Attention: Parking lot behind "Thöni Aluwelten" temporarily closed! Replacement parking space directly in front of the Thöni site at the bus turning area!

This great lake hike takes you to the beautiful Hundstalsee lake with its "Apollontempel" (Temple of Apollo). From Stiglreith car park, either follow the lift track or the road up to the Rosskogelhütte mountain hut and then continue to Krimpenbachsattel, which is a col set at an altitude of 899 metres above sea level. Pass through the gate to the other side of the fence and follow the Schützensteig trail into the Hundstal valley. When you come to a shepherd's stable, the path joins a trail leading up from the Inzinger Alm mountain hut. Follow this trail as it leads left up a steep slope and into a large basin where you'll see a hunting lodge set in a prime location. Another steep slope then takes you up to the Hundstalsee lake. From there, you can either go left or right around the lake to the "Apollontempel" (Temple of Apollo). This is a lovely spot for a break, in a wide bowl between the Peider Spitze and Weissstein peaks.  The story behind this piece of natural stone art: In August 1986, the two artists Heinz Triendl and Robert Tribus started to build a work of art made entirely of natural rock at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level in the Rosskogel area near Oberperfuss. The work of art is an ecologically and aesthetically innovative piece that is intended to represent the connection between nature & humans, art & humans and art & nature. The "Apollontempel", as the piece is known, is made entirely of rocks from the area, which were stacked without using any binding agent. (Author Ernst Aigner)

The Larchsteig is a short circular hike on the edge of the village of Obsteig. If you take your time, you can discover lots of interesting information about the larch itself, as well the history of the larch forests, how they are managed and their inhabitants. The highlights include glacial erratics, which are large boulders from the Ice Age, and a large stone with a circle on it, known as the "Kreisstein", which still remains a mystery. The duration of the route depends entirely on who is doing it: runners only need 15 minutes, hikers can complete it in 45 minutes, interested hikers may need two hours and anyone who really wants to savour it should allow half a day.

After walking for about 15 minutes, you will meet the trail that runs between Pleisenjöchl and Pleisen. 2: From Axamer Kögele, it is also possible to hike down the sometimes very steep "Axamer Skiabfahrt" ski run, which takes you down to the village of Axams in about 1½ to 1¾ hours.
