Axams - A nativity scene village
Nativity scene meets craftsmanship
Nativity scene craftsmen create these little works of art using a variety of natural materials, from wood and small bricks to moss and lichen. The Christian miniatures are adorned with loving details and home to magnificent wooden figures, lovingly carved by the local master woodcarver. Axams has a long tradition of nativity scenes and is one of the most remarkable nativity scene villages in Tyrol today. During the period between Christmas and Candlemas (2 February), impressive nativity scenes can be admired at the parish church, at the Lindenkapelle chapel or in the village hall, where they delight both children and adults alike.
Nativity scenes that have stories to tell
Cherished nativity scenes can also be found in many private households around Axams. Every nativity scene is unique and full of mystery – they are all handmade, in the unique style of their craftsmen, and each one has a story to tell. Nativity scene fanatics are welcome to take a look at these cherished, nativity scenes. And anyone who wants to learn more can take part in one of the small guided group tours organised by the local nativity scene association in Axams. The tour gives visitors the chance to admire the most beautiful nativity scenes and hear the stories behind them, with particular attention placed on the hand-carved nativity scene figurines.
