Forecast

The area of high pressure which has influenced our weather for the last few days is moving towards the Balkans; at the same time weather fronts accompanied by thunderstorms will push in from France. However, they will not reach us before the evening and this is why we will get another sunny summer day with high temperatures.

Tendency

Saturday morning will still be cloudy and showers cannot be excluded. In the course of the day, however, the sun will gain the upper hand. Before Sunday the weather will be fine again.

Axamer Almabtrieb

Traditional “Almabtrieb” celebration in Axams

Every year in autumn, local farmers bring their cows back down from the mountain pastures where they have spent the summer. This is known as the “Almabtrieb” – a traditional parade and celebration that is an absolute autumn highlight. Huge herds of sheep and cattle make their way along country roads to the towns and villages where they will spend the winter. Farmers mark the occasion by dressing the animals in colourful floral wreaths, headdresses and neck decorations with embroidered leather straps. Many of the animals also wear bells around their necks so they can be heard from afar.

The sheep are the first animals to arrive back in the village of Axams – approximately 1,000 are brought down into the valley on 6 September every year. On the following Saturday, they are joined by the larger animals, such as cows, oxen, horses and calves. Then the party starts – a celebration full of music, customs and delicious traditional delicacies.
