Fresh mountain air and peaks close enough to touch. The varied mountain huts all offer tradition and authenticity in its purest form. Many were built in the last few centuries, while others are almost 1,000 years old. The Kemater Alm in the Senderstal valley, for example, was first mentioned in 1142, when the area was referred to as “montum alpinum Senders” by the Bishop of Brixen.
The Kemater Alm is located 1,673 metres above sea level at the foot of the mighty Kalkkögel mountain range. It’s a popular tourist destination and one of the most popular hiking destinations around Grinzens. The small, nearby chapel, dedicated in 1932, is also a nice place to take a break. A bit higher up, at an altitude of 1,977 metres above sea level, lies the Adolf-Pichler-Hütte – a mountain hut built by the “Akademischer Alpenklub Innsbruck” (Academic Alpine Club of Innsbruck). Both of these mountain huts offer delicious specialities, homemade treats, fabulous views and a cosy place to stay the night at the foot of the Kalkkögel mountain range.
