The historic bridge circuit in winter
A very varied walk with beautiful highlights and many comfortable benches for enjoying a break along the way. Romantic wooden bridges, an abandoned aviary, an idyllic pavilion and an old Jewish cemetery from the 16th century make this tour an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. The path leads through a beautiful mixed forest, which provides plenty of shade in summer but lets the sun shine through in autumn and spring.
Coming from Rennweg road, cross the Hans-Psenner-Steg bridge to the northern side of the River Inn. Cross the road at the traffic lights and follow the Heinrich Süß Weg trail uphill until you come to the second bend. From there, take the narrow path that turns off to the west. Almost immediately, you will come to a second covered wooden bridge.
An abandoned aviary is the next extraordinary structure you come across on this hike. After the bend in the path, you will suddenly find yourself standing in the park at the Villa Blanka hotel management school. The path continues to the right, leading past several park benches where you can enjoy wonderful views of Innsbruck. Further east, past the back exit of Villa Blanka, you come to the next wooden bridge.
You then come to a grassy area where you can play or soak up the sun while enjoying the view of the 15th century Weiherburg building above. This is also where you will find another of the picturesque attractions passed during this hike: a pavilion set in a very romantic spot! Once you've had your fill of this lovely location, follow the path east until you come to the crossroads. There, another impressive wooden bridge awaits. As soon as you have crossed the bridge, you will see a sign for the "alter jüdischer Friedhof" (the old Jewish cemetery) and the memorial immediately below. It is well worth taking a short detour down to check it out.
Afterwards, continue east along the narrow path around the Judenbühel until you come to a paved road. Follow the road to the left. After a few metres, turn to follow the signs up Judenbühel hill. At the top, you will find a very large, flat, grassy area. On the northern side, there is a great children's playground with a varied selection of play equipment. For relaxation seekers, there are comfortable benches that look out to the south and provide wonderful views of Innsbruck. You are now at the highest point of the historic bridge circuit and the route leads downhill from here. Follow the path back down to the road.
You now have several options:
- Option 1) Complete the circuit by taking the little path on your left and following it downhill, over a small wooden bridge, along a wide walking path to the River Inn and back to the starting point at the "Hans Psenner Steg" bridge.
- Option 2) Stay on the road and walk to the "Alpenzoo" lift station for the Hungerburgbahn funicular. Take the funicular down into the city centre or up to the Hungerburg district. (100 metres to the Alpenzoo station)
- Option 3) Follow the signs "zum Alpenzoo" to the Alpine Zoo and stop in for a visit. (7-minute walk to the zoo)
