De Innsbrucker Hofgarten (hoftuin) biedt talrijke varianten voor kleinere en grotere wandelingen in de schaduw van machtige naald- en loofbomen vanuit de hele wereld. Op de paden door het park kunt u energie opdoen en heerlijk ontspannen. Het circa tien hectare grote park in de nabijheid van het historische centrum van Innsbruck beschikt over meerdere ingangen, minstens één in elke windrichting.
Wie hier flaneert, wandelt in historische sporen. De oorsprong van de Hofgarten gaat meer dan 600 jaar terug. Allereerst als beemd aangelegd, veranderde Ferdinand II. de vlaktes in een Renaissancetuin. Door een verandering in barokstijl werd het een park in Engelse landschapsstijl. Sinds meer dan 150 jaar is de basis van de Hofgarten niet meer veranderd. In het jaar 2001 werd het gehele complex onder natuurbescherming gesteld door het zgn. Bundesdenkmalamt.
Eén van de paden voert aan de binnenzijde langs de omheining. Opmerkzame wandelaars valt de kleine rotstuin op, die zich ongeveer halverwege aan de westelijke muur bevindt. Hier leven alpiene planten zoals steenbreek, vinger- of vlaskruid. De vertakkingen leiden naar het Hofgartenpaviljoen in het centrum van het park. Bij de laatste sanering van het gebouw werden elegante wandschilderingen in het interieur van het gebouw blootgelegd en gerestaureerd. Direct daarnaast bevindt zich de idyllische vijver met waterlelies en andere waterplanten.
Niet over het hoofd te zien staat een knoestige trompetboom in het zuidoosten daarvan. Met zijn 120 jaar is deze echter niet de oudste boom in de Hofgarten. De Maria-Theresien-sparreboom, die ten noorden van het paviljoen in de lucht steekt, is rond de 260 jaar oud.
Op alle paden flaneert men langs imposante bomen, langs lokale en exotische struiken en – in de zomer – langs kleurrijk gevulde bloemenborders. De verzorgde gazons mogen sinds enkele jaren worden betreden en gebruikt. Terwijl hier vroeger schapen graasden, wordt het gazon tegenwoordig machinaal kortgehouden.
Wie zin heeft gekregen in een langere wandeling in het groen, flaneert verder door de „Kleine Hofgarten“ – ook wel Kammer- resp. Gouverneurstuin genaamd – langs de Rennweg. Aan de andere kant van de straat ligt de Engelse tuin, waar de schaakspelers uit de Hofgarten naartoe verhuisd zijn. Vanaf hier kunt u de weg langs de Inn vervolgen – ofwel richting Saggen of richting binnenstad en Mariahilf.
