Spring has finally sprung and that means one thing: waterfall walks. As the snow melts, Innsbruck’s rivers and gorges are filled with crystal-clear Alpine water and the waterfalls can be out of this world. So if you want to explore some wild and wet landscapes this spring, here are three places to try.
THE MÜHLAUER KLAMM
The Innsbruck district of Mühlau is a real gem. Perched high up on a hill overlooking the city, Mühlau offers both beautiful old houses and amazing views of the Serles and Nockspitze mountains.
But the highlight of Mühlau is the fabulous Mühlauer Klamm gorge. To find it, head to the modern Karmeliter Kloster church and simply follow the stream up through the gorge. You’ll encounter steps, bridges and some gorgeous waterfalls before emerging from the rocky cavern. From there, you can take the path to the left and head towards Hungerburg or Arzler Alm for a well-deserved beer!

THE SILLSCHLUCHT
You are probably familiar with the Bergisel ski jump. But did you know that the Bergisel is also home to one of Innsbruck’s most stunning gorges? The Sillschlucht gorge is a hidden paradise and a local favourite on a sunny afternoon – just be aware that due to the Brenner Basis Tunnel works at the entrance to the Sillschlucht, access is currently best via Bergisel and the Panormarunde Tour, then down into the gorge .
And once you’re there, you’ll understand why. With fresh mountain water, lush forest and even a beach, you’ll feel a million miles away from the city up above. Spring is a particularly amazing time to visit but be sure to pay attention to the water levels: they can rise very suddenly at this time of year!
If you like climbing and waterfalls, then the Ehnbachklamm gorge is the place for you! Located near the town of Zirl, the Ehnbachklamm is probably the most impressive of the three walks. Starting at the top end of the town, you can follow the path up through the rocky ravine, experiencing several stunning waterfalls along the way.
The Ehnbachklamm is also a big climbing area, with nearly 130 routes for both beginners and experts. There’s nothing like climbing your personal best, before ripping off your shoes and soaking your aching feet in the ice-cold water. Add a bit of spring sunshine and you’ve got all the ingredients for a wonderful Sunday afternoon.
