Kühtai in the Fall: A High-Alpine Experience

Kühtai, with its stunning scenery, is at its very best in the fall—golden light, colorful forests, and crisp mountain air… simply perfect for a fall hike. Together with my dog Marley, we set out for the “ Neunerkogel ” and made our way back via the “Drei-Seen-Runde.”

It’s best to start early in the morning at the little chapel in Kühtai. From there, head west along the side street and walk across the hotel parking lot to the hiking trail. Follow the trail at a leisurely pace along the Finstertalbach, always heading upstream until you reach the dam. Even here, it’s worth taking a quick look back—the panoramic view is simply breathtaking.

From the “ Finstertal ” Reservoir, the trail continues eastward. The best way to reach the Neunerkogel is to simply follow the trail markers; the path is clearly visible and easy to find. Along the way, you’ll be treated to beautiful views time and again: ahead of you, the summit cross rises majestically into the sky, while behind you, sunlight glistens on the surface of the reservoir. Once you reach the top, the panoramic view over Kühtai is simply breathtaking. The view of the surrounding peaks and the Ötztal Valley makes every bit of effort worthwhile and turns the hike into an unforgettable experience.

After a long break at the Neunerkogel, you’ll head back to the dam of the “ Finstertal ” reservoir, this time with a magnificent view of the shimmering water glistening in the sun. At the dam, head east and follow the signs for the Drei-Seen-Runde. The route is varied—sometimes it leads through meadows, other times along the lake. The last lake on the loop is particularly impressive: calm, crystal-clear, and the perfect backdrop for photos. Small lookout spots invite you to linger, and the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains makes the return trip a relaxing experience.

This hike is also easily manageable with your dog in the summer. There are plenty of water sources along the way, and you can easily work your way around grazing livestock. If you’re traveling with children, I’d only recommend the Three Lakes Loop in Kühtai. The climb to the Neunerkogel is about 650 meters in elevation gain, which can be easily managed in about an hour and a half. The descent via the Three Lakes Loop usually takes about an hour and a half as well.

Kühtai is easily accessible by car (about 40 minutes from Innsbruck) as well as by public transportation. Take the opportunity to visit this high-alpine landscape in the fall while you still can. Experience shows that winter can set in quickly here. When it does, Kühtai becomes a paradise for skiers. After all, the town is located at 2,020 meters above sea level, and the slopes are even higher.
