The famous panoramic trail between the Patscherkofel and Glungezer mountains leads through one of the largest Swiss stone pine forests in Europe - we are talking about the legendary and much-visited Zirbenweg. In addition to the ancient stone pines, it offers a breathtaking panorama high above the rooftops of Innsbruck. The trail runs relatively flat between the Patscherkofelbahn and the Glungezerbahn and is a real highlight for nature and hiking enthusiasts. Also for families with children. We carried our little one in the Kraxe on our backs.
Hiking start: with the gondola to the mountain station
We start our family hike in the morning with a comfortable gondola ride to the mountain station on the Patscherkofel. We set off directly from there - with the Kraxe on our backs and full of anticipation for the adventure with an excellent panorama. The Zirbenweg trail is perfect for little explorers, big nature lovers and also for our four-legged companions. A wide path leads us past fragrant Swiss stone pines, across idyllic alpine meadows to the cozy Boschebenhütte, which invites us to take a well-earned rest. There is a wooden cross near the hut - one of many beautiful photo spots along the way.
continue along the Zirbenweg
From there, the trail runs gently up and down along the tree line to the Tulfeinalm, without any major differences in altitude. The Zirbenweg lies at around 2,000 meters above sea level and is embedded in a magnificent natural backdrop. Rest areas along the way invite you to linger - with wonderful views of the Inn Valley. Depending on the weather, the hike is easily accessible between June and October. The period in July is particularly recommended, when the alpine roses are in full bloom and the landscape is resplendent in vibrant colors.
Information about the Zirbenweg tour
The Zirbenweg trail is around seven kilometers long and takes around 2.5 hours to walk. There are around 200 meters of ascent and 100 meters of descent. The tour can be walked in both directions. At the start of the hike, there are a few water sources where you can stock up on water. However, as there are few other water sources available along the way, you should definitely take enough water with you to stay well hydrated. For dog owners: Please also note that there may be herds of cows with young animals at the mountain stations.
