Getting to the trailhead without a car: It’s now very easy with Ruftaxi and the Sommeraktivbus. These two services serve the regions of Kühtai-Sellraintal and Mieminger Plateau.

Anyone who’s ever been stuck in traffic or spent ages looking for a parking spot knows: leaving the car in the garage and taking public transportation can be quite relaxing. Just hop on, look out the window, enjoy the scenery, and look forward to the day ahead. Plus, you’re also traveling in a more eco-friendly way.

Getting to the Hiking Trails by Bus and On-Demand Taxi

Although Tyrol has a well-developed public transportation network, some hiking areas have so far had only limited access to scheduled service. This is exactly where Innsbruck Tourism’s new mobility services come in: With the on-demand taxi service at Sellraintal and Kühtai, as well as the Summer Activity Bus at Mieminger Plateau, popular hiking starting points are now even easier to reach—without needing your own car. This way, both locals and visitors benefit from greater flexibility and a relaxed start to their outdoor adventure.

My Favorite Place—Now Even More Accessible

I say it time and time again: This Mieminger Plateau is one of the most beautiful regions around Innsbruck for me. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll, a family-friendly hike, or a challenging mountain tour—there really is a route here for everyone. To ensure that the most beautiful starting points are easily accessible even without a car, the Summer Activity Bus runs several times a day from June 27 to October 4 (timetable) between Wildermieming, Mieming, Barwies, Obsteig and Holzleiten. It complements the existing transportation options and makes excursions in the region even more flexible for visitors and locals alike.

Via the Alpsteig to Marienbergalm

With such a wide selection of beautiful hikes, I really find it hard to limit myself to just one tour. For this post, I finally decided on the hike from Gasthaus Arzkasten to the Marienbergalm —a varied route with magnificent views. You can take the Summer Activity Bus all the way to the bus stop Obsteig | Arzkasten and start your hike there. If you’d like, you can grab a bite to eat at the inn before the ascent, then head along the quiet Alpsteig toward the Marienbergalm . A quick tip: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes. While the trail isn’t particularly technically challenging, it’s narrow in places and runs over root-covered terrain. The hike is easily manageable with older, sure-footed children. And believe me: The trail itself is at least as beautiful as the destination.

The journey is the destination—don't forget to enjoy it

First, head toward Lehnberghaus —which, by the way, is also a beautiful hike that I can recommend even to families with young children. At the first fork in the trail, keep left and follow the signs to the Marienbergalm. The Alpsteig runs along the right side of the Marienbergbach through the shady forest. I hate to admit it: Despite the shade and even though the trail never gets particularly steep, I worked up quite a sweat. Luckily, my dog isn’t exactly a model of endurance either and needed little breaks every now and then. So I was able to blame my breaks on my lazy furry friend without any guilt. Little by little, the landscape opens up, and you reach the vast alpine pastures of the Marienbergalm.

If you’re up for it: You can go even higher

Marienbergalm, located at 1,622 meters above sea level, is the perfect spot for a well-deserved break. Do yourselves a favor: Stop in, order a cold drink and a hearty dumpling, and enjoy the magnificent view. If you’re not done yet, you can continue the hike—for example, all the way up to Marienbergjoch at around 2,000 meters. Everyone else can simply make their way back at a leisurely pace—either via the Alpsteig trail you used to ascend, or—if you want to be easy on your knees—take the road toward Weisland and from there turn left back to the Arzkasten inn.

An Adventure for Little Explorers

If you’re not in the mood for hiking at all and/or are traveling with small children, you can still take the Summer Activity Bus to the stop Obsteig | Arzkasten and take a leisurely stroll from there to the “ Weisland ” adventure playground. It’s a delightful playground with lovingly crafted wooden figures, swings, and climbing structures—everything that makes a child’s heart race.

Flexible Travel in Kühtai-Sellraintal

As mentioned at the beginning, there are great mobility options not only at the Mieminger Plateau but also throughout the region Kühtai-Sellraintal. For the first time, a shared taxi service is being introduced as a flexible option in the On-Demand region. From July 11 to September 13, 2026, locals and visitors will have access to a shared on-demand taxi (Ruftaxi) for the first time —a great way to make hikes even more flexible. You won’t be dependent on bus schedules or crowded, paid parking lots.

Book, hop in, and off you go

The on-demand taxi runs daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and can be flexibly booked to a specific location (inns, hiking trailheads, mountain hut parking lots, and town centers) within the service area. This area includes Kühtai (up to Dortmunder Hütte), St. Sigmund including the Gleirsch Valley, Gries, Praxmar, Lüsens, and Sellrain including Fotschertal. Important: The ride must be booked by phone at least 60 minutes before departure. You can do this via Taxi Haider by calling +43 (0) 676 4329258. The fare is 5.00 euros per person—regardless of the route you take. Children under 15 ride for free when accompanied by an adult.
