The award of the Province of Tyrol for New Building has existed since 1996. In addition to architectural quality, innovative strength and forward-looking, creative solutions are among the central criteria for the selection, which is made by an international jury. The most exciting projects are shown in the exhibition "New Building in Tyrol 2020" at aut. architektur und tirol.
18 NOMINATED
There were75 submissions this year. The jury, consisting of Anne-Julchen Bernhardt (Aachen), Peter Haimerl (Munich) and Marta Schreieck (Vienna), examined them on paper and on site. This was followed by 18 nominations with three awards, six recognitions and four honorable mentions.
Traditionally, the exhibition in aut shows the nominated projects with photos, plans and short texts. It is a must for anyone interested in architecture, as it shows exemplary examples of high-quality structural solutions in various fields.
The exhibition "New Building in Tyrol 2020" at aut. architektur und tirol runs until the end of February 2021.
OUTSTANDING EXAMPLES
Among the projects presented are also numerous from the Innsbruck and Tyrol region. In addition to the Neustift school campus in the Stubaital and the Swarovski manufactory in Wattens, the renovation of the Kettenbrücke school in the Saggen district of Innsbruck received awards.
The renovation of the Innsbruck Tourist Information Centre at Burggraben, the house for psychosocial support and living in the Innsbruck district of Olympisches Dorf and the Martinsbrücke bridge near Zirl, a foot and cycle path bridge over the River Inn, received recognition awards. I will briefly introduce the four here.
The new building of the Alpine School Innsbruck (ASI) in Natters was planned by Snøhetta Studio Innsbruck.
RENOVATION SCHOOL CHAIN BRIDGE
Between 2016 and 2019, the Kettenbrücke school building in the area between Erzherzog-Eugen-Straße and Falkstraße was renovated and converted. The Innsbruck office Studio Lois was responsible for all construction work on the educational quarter there. The campus consists of an elementary and secondary school, an educational institution for elementary education, a kindergarten and an after-school care centre.

The building's outer skin is particularly striking, consisting of polycarbonate panels that alternate with large windows to create light-filled interiors. Inside, it is hard to distinguish between old and new, the jurors noted. Partly responsible for this is the choice of materials (concrete, silver fir, felt and glass) and colours (grey, beige and white).

MARTINS BRIDGE NEAR ZIRL
The promenades along the Inn are not only extremely popular with the people of Innsbruck, the green ribbon runs through the entire city, continuing towards Hall in the east and Zirl in the west. The cycle path invites to short and long tours. The new Martinsbrücke bridge connects the communities of Zirl and Unterperfuss. It was planned by the architect Hans Peter Gruber.

The bridge is a total of 100 meters long, making it the "first wood-concrete composite bridge of this length in Europe", as the jury text states approvingly. The jury was also full of praise for the design: "The architect and engineer have created an elegant, striking and structurally innovative bridge from the combination of wood and concrete". Supported by two concrete supports on the bank, it seems to float above the Inn.

HOUSE FOR PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT AND HOUSING
Located directly on the wonderful Inn promenade in O-Dorf, the building immediately catches the eye. This is ensured by the reddish coloured concrete skin and the unusual polygonal shape of the house. Added to this are the striking photovoltaic panels on the south façade of the building.

The ground floor has a clear indentation towards the Inn promenade. This creates a kind of arbour. It protects the residents from rain and wind when they are outdoors. The facility offers a home and therapy possibilities to people with chronic mental problems.

TOURISM INFORMATION OF THE INNSBRUCK REGION
The architects Betina Hanel and Manfred Sandner have turned the Tourist Information at the Burggraben into a special jewel. The history of this building alone is phenomenal, as it is a former stable. You can read about it in my blog post from the time of the renovations.
The floor has been lowered to its original level, the striking vaulted ceiling exposed, and the interior walls and space-defining Breccia columns restored. A long ramp and stairs lead to the service area. The result is a spacious, clearly structured hall with quality of stay. The architects provided the windows with perforated ceramic arabesques. They refer to the fact that the outer wall of the building was originally part of the city wall.

"The architects have achieved remarkable things: The uncovering and transformation of a historical space, which through this modern intervention - with a great sense of poetry - has become amazingly timeless and thus tells a wonderful continuation of history," reads the jury text.

The exhibition "Neues Bauen in Tirol" (New Building in Tyrol) offers the opportunity to view 14 further outstanding examples of current architectural work in Tyrol, to look at detailed views and to study plans. It also whets the appetite for an architectural tour of discovery through Innsbruck and the surrounding area.
If you are interested in the architectural history of Innsbruck, Kristina Erhart has blogged about it.
