Climbing is one of the most beautiful sports there is (caution, subjective expression of opinion!). Many think so, and there are more and more climbers, especially in and around Innsbruck (not empirically proven, but definitely observable). Trend sports always bring unpleasant side effects, this must be avoided!

For this reason, the Innsbruck association Snow & Alpine Awareness Camps, Climbers Paradise Tirol and the Karwendel Nature Park have compiled recommendations and tips for climbers. The topics range from environmentally friendly travel and observance of local rules to respectful interaction with other athletes, interest groups and of course, above all, nature. On October 21, there will also be an action day in the Ehnbachklamm gorge.

RESPECT GUIDELINES: PAY ATTENTION TO CURRENT AND LOCAL REGULATIONS

When planning for your climbing day, it's not just the difficulty of the routes and parking that's important. Look to see if there are other regulations in the area. These may be justified due to the interests of nature (e.g. temporary closures due to breeding areas) or due to the interests of landowners. Please adhere to them to ensure the most harmonious coexistence possible!

BY FAIR MEANS: USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR ACTIVE CLIMATE PROTECTION

Use public transportation. This way you can make a personal contribution to climate protection. If this is not possible, try to form car pools and park your car only at the designated parking spaces.

USE YOUR BIKE

If possible, ride your bike to the climbing spot. It doesn't get any more environmentally friendly than that!

DON'T LEAVE ANY TRASH BEHIND!

Self-explanatory and self-evident: discarded waste such as tape, cigarette butts or organic waste disfigure the environment. If you have to do your business, use existing facilities. If this is not possible, find a quiet place and take the toilet paper back after use in a bag you brought with you!

RESPECT YOUR NATURE: DO NOT LEAVE ANY TRACES IN NATURE!

Be sure to stay on the designated path when walking to and from the camp. Please be careful not to run through meadows or make unnecessary noise. If you have your dog with you, please make sure that it does not run around freely! Do not forget dog bags and dispose of them at the nearest waste garbage can - that goes without saying. Fire making is to be avoided.

DO NOT CAMP WHERE YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO!

Use only the official campsites and designated camping facilities. Wild camping is an absolute no-go - camping in parking lots, in the mountains and in the great outdoors is not allowed.

OBSERVE THE CORRECT TIME OF DAY AND AVOID TWILIGHT!

What you may not know is that twilight hours are extremely important for wildlife. Therefore, plan your stays in such a way that you do not start your way home from the crag in the dark. Night climbing with lamps should also be avoided.

GRIASS ENK: WE LOOK AT EACH OTHER!

We climbers look out for each other. Respectful interaction with each other is appropriate, so that small things do not suddenly become big problems. We also maintain friendly relations with other interest groups.

Action Day Climbing with Respect: Climbing and Nature Conservation in the Ehnbachklamm Gorge

As part of the initiative, a joint action day will take place in the Ehnbachklamm gorge in Zirl on October 21, 2023 in cooperation with the Innsbruck Nature Film Festival. How can we be more respectful and aware of nature when climbing? How can we continue to practice our sport outdoors while understanding all the facets of nature around us? At this one-day event, SAAC mountain guides will show you on the rock what matters in terms of safety. At the same time, you will learn more about the flora and fauna in the Ehnbachklamm gorge from nature park rangers. In addition, the litter left behind will be collected together and disposed of professionally in order to improve the landscape. A free event for all climbers who want to learn climbing in a holistic way.
