One of the great pleasures of winter in Innsbruck is the chance for some outdoor ice skating. There are few things better than carving a few elegant lines on a cold, crisp winters day surrounded by snowy peaks, low sun shining brightly....ahhh....bliss...

Although, in all honesty, I'm probably more Bambi than Brian Boitano. No matter, it's the taking part that counts, right?

Quick tip: Ski goggles or sunglasses to shield your eyes are extremely useful on the bright, sunny days. Which are the best days for a spot of outdoor skating I reckon. And helmets for your youngsters are strongly advised.

Okay, lace up! (or clip up...)

Olympiaworld Innsbruck

Olympiastraße 10

+43 512 / 33 83 80

This is the big one. Lots of room and stunning views of the surrounding mountains, this fantastic outdoor ice rink is located in the 'sporty' area of the city, also know as OlympiaWorld Innsbruck. It's next to the Olympic Hall, built to host the ice-based events at the 1964 Winter Olympics, although extensive renovations took place between 2000 and 2004. Not far away is the Tivoli Stadium, home to the Wacker Innsbruck and WSG Tirol soccer teams and the Raiders Tirol American football team.

We've been skating there as a family several times and it's an absolute blast. The annual Fasching (carnival) party is especially fun. People dress up to skate around and there are prizes for the best costumes.

It’s (almost) always on the last day of the winter half-term holidays, which this year is February 16th. It’s called the TT Kindereisfest because the main organizer is the TT (Tiroler Tageszeitung) newspaper.

Baggersee

Archenweg 62

+43 664 / 81 18 709

Over on the eastern edge of the city, you'll find Baggersee, a fantastic swimming lake which is very popular in summer. There's also a brilliant playground nearby and in winter time a 600 square metre pop up ice rink. It's a lovely location for a spot of outdoor skating, perhaps in conjunction with a walk around the lake and/or a bite to eat at the Deck 47 restaurant.

Although a little way from the centre of the city, It can be reached by bus. The F or R bus from the city centre will take you very close.

It's around a 15 minute bus ride from the main train station/transport hub. Check the IVB website.

Open 30th November - 16th February 2025

Open daily from 10am until 8pm

Cost: €4.60 per adult, €2.10 per child

Skate hire is €3.90

Sillpark Shopping Centre

Museumstraße 38

+43 664 / 81 18 710

Very close to the centre of the city, you'll find the Sillpark shopping centre. The area outside transforms into a winter wonderland when the temperature drops, with food stalls, Christmas trees for sale and (best of all) a pop up ice rink. One of the big appeals is that it's easy to get to, which also means it can get quite crowded at times, but no matter, there's usually a nice atmosphere there and it's very close to several restaurants and places to go and warm up afterwards.

Open 29th November - 16th February 2025

Open daily from 10am until 8pm

Cost: €4,60 per adult, €2.10 per child

Skate hire is €3.90

The Innsbruck area is also served by several other ice rinks.

Happy skating!
