Innsbruck's markets boast a long tradition; in fact, there has been a market dedicated to children and families for no less than 30 years. In addition, the famous "Street of the Giants," in which the huge legendary Tyrolean figures tower, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. And this year there are many "fairy tale" novelties for the little guests!

The Riesengasse and the new giant Serles

The giants located in the street of the same name (Riesengasse), represent as many legendary figures, protagonists of Tyrolean sagas. To the 4 already present, the giant Serles, named after a mountain in the Stubai Valley, was added this year. This is a very naughty giant, who used to sow terror in the woods with his hunting dogs! Fortunately, his statue on the other hand is really good, and like the others he waits for the children for a nice souvenir photo. By the way, the little street is really delightful, dotted with typical little stores and places where you can enjoy Tyrolean specialties.

The "fairy tale street" and its new installations

On Kiebachgasse and Seilergasse streets, many new interactive figures await fairy tale-loving children, to bring them as if by magic into the heart of the stories they read in books: Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White...these are just some of the characters one can discover while strolling...with their noses turned up! The Snow White-themed installation is a favorite of my daughter, who loves looking at the evil queen in the magic mirror.

The Marktplatz market, a classic for children

The family market was originally located at Landhausplatz, and since 2007 it has been relocated to its current location at Marktplatz, following the scheduling of renovations to the original location. Marktplatz proved to be an ideal location, so much so that the marketplace has remained there permanently. The river, the bridge, the colorful, illuminated little houses form a perfect setting, and make the market almost part of a nativity scene. True Christmas magic! The star is certainly the merry-go-round, built in 1883, and currently one of the oldest merry-go-rounds in Europe. The market can be recognized from afar, thanks to the very bright Swarovski tree, almost 20 meters high, on which a large crystal star towers. New this year is the virtual reality carriage, for adventurous rides from the comfort of your seat wearing 3D glasses. Only for the brave!

Useful information

The Advent markets at Marktplatz and Altstadt, where the Giants and Fairy Tale Street are located, are open until December 23, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is a rich children's program every day: at Marktplatz the puppet theater (afternoons from 2 to 6 p.m.), children's afternoons with discounts on attractions (every Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m.) and Advent Sunday celebrations (at 5 p.m. presents for the children). In the Altstadt the fairy tale shows on the theater car (at 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm), my daughter's favorites. Happy magic to all!
