When winter slowly embraces spring, the most beautiful time begins in Innsbruck for skiers who are not only looking for the perfect turn, but also sun, enjoyment and panoramic views. Sunny skiing is the magic word - and anyone who has experienced it knows that there is hardly anything better. Especially in the ski resorts with guaranteed snow Kühtai and Axamer Lizumboth of which are not far from Innsbruck and are easily accessible by public transport. Here you start the morning on perfectly groomed pistes and end up relaxing on a sun terrace in the afternoon - ski goggles down, sunglasses up.
Kühtai
Skiing in the sun at over 2,000 meters
In the Kühtai sunny skiing begins at the highest level - literally. At 2,020 meters above sea level, you will find the best snow conditions here right into spring. While the cyclists are already doing their laps down in the valley, here you can enjoy the firn, the clear mountain air and plenty of sunshine.
A real tip for sun worshippers:inside is the terrace of the Vaya Kühtai. Located directly on the piste, it attracts guests with its modern design, comfortable lounge furniture and a fantastic view of the surrounding peaks. Here you can enjoy a cappuccino just as well as a cool glass of Aperol or one of the many cocktails on the menu. You will also be spoiled with culinary delights here - with sunshine all day long. Every Saturday, a DJ plays chilled beats to accompany the sun.
If you fancy a rustic stop-off, you'll find your place in the sun at the Kaiser-Max-Hütte your place in the sun. Traditional Tyrolean dishes and a wonderful terrace that invites you to linger. The perfect place to recharge your batteries and soak up the warmth after a few sporty descents.
Not to forget: the Drei-Seen-Hütte. It is picturesquely situated on the slope of the same name and is known for its cozy atmosphere - and its fantastic sun terrace. Here you can relax and unwind before hitting the slopes again.
Axamer Lizum - The white roof terrace of Innsbruck
Just 30 minutes from Innsbruck's old town is Axamer Lizum - one of Tyrol's most snow-sure ski areas. Here you can go high up and enjoy a little break above the clouds while skiing in the sun.
The highlight is the Hoadl-Haus at 2,340 meters. The huge sun terrace and the open glass front create a feeling of freedom and space. You sit sheltered from the wind and still have the full mountain panorama in view - perfect for enjoying the spring sunshine to the full. If you want more action, head to the après-ski umbrella in front.
BBQ on the ski slope
Another highlight is the Dohlennest. In addition to the cozy sun terrace, it also offers an open-air BBQ in spring. Here, the meat sizzles on the grill while you enjoy the view with a cool drink in your hand - and perhaps meet a curious alpine chough watching the action at close quarters.
And if you really want to switch off, the Sunnalm is just the right place. Located in the middle of the ski area, it boasts a relaxed atmosphere, delicious food and - of course - a sun terrace that lives up to its name.
Sunset and ski touring experience on Wednesday
If you visit the Lizum on Wednesday, you can even enjoy skiing in the sun into the evening. Wednesday is touring night! The pistes remain open until 10 pm - perfect for anyone who wants to experience the sunset in the mountains. While the last light bathes the sky above the Stubai Alps in warm colors, get ready for the descent. And if you're looking for even more adventure, take your headlamp with you and then ski down into the valley under the starry sky. A very special experience that you won't forget in a hurry.
Skiing in the sun: Spring the Innsbruck way
Whether in Kühtai or Axamer Lizum - spring is at its best here. Sun skiing means combining the best of two seasons: powdery snow in the morning, warm rays of sunshine in the afternoon. And if you want, sunsets in the mountains too. So, don't forget your sun cream, put on your sunglasses - and off you go!
