But did you know that Innsbruck is already home to an incredibly passionate roller derby team? Meet the Fearless Bruisers, a local roller derby team that’s been shaking up the scene since 2016. If you’re new to the sport, roller derby may seem a little intimidating, but once you understand the basics, it’s a thrilling spectacle full of speed, strength, and strategy. Let’s take a closer look at what roller derby is all about, who the Fearless Bruisers are, and why you should be excited to watch this sport.

What Is Roller Derby?
At its core, flat track roller derby is a full-contact, fast-paced sport played on roller skates. It’s not just about speed – it’s about agility, teamwork and strategy. Two teams, each with five skaters, compete in short matchups called "jams" that last up to two minutes. The objective is simple: one player, known as the jammer, tries to lap the opposing team’s skaters to score points. Meanwhile, the rest of the team – the blockers – use their skills to either help their jammer through the pack or stop the opposing jammer. It’s like a fast-moving game of chess on wheels, where every move counts, and teamwork is essential. The game is high-intensity, with lots of twists, turns, and strategic hits, making it really exciting to watch. I have definitely over-simplified it here, but check out a ‘bout’ for yourself and learn more!

Camaraderie with a competitive spirit
The Fearless Bruisers are Innsbruck’s very own roller derby team, and they’ve been making waves since their formation in 2016. They aim to break down traditional notions of femininity and strength, proving that roller derby is a sport for everyone – no matter their background. Training up to six hours a week, the Fearless Bruisers are a force to be reckoned with and they’ve earned a reputation for their dedication, camaraderie, and competitive spirit. I got to watch one of their training sessions and interview them. They were so welcoming, friendly, and immediately tried to recruit me to play. After a strength and conditioning session the team started in strategic game play going through game scenarios and discussing democratically the best way to play. They are incredibly supportive of one another!
Roller derby players notoriously pick cheeky nicknames usually some kind of pun! Sandy Crush, Cruiella De Wild, Blockwork Orange and Frau Hitt are just a few on the Fearless Bruisers. (Photos : @colobo/Christoforos Kasapidis)
How Can You Get Involved?
The Fearless Bruisers have built their team mostly by word of mouth. Fans become players, friends of players join and so on. It’s a community sport, and there are many ways for you to get involved. Whether you want to watch the action live, volunteer at the event, become a referee, or even join a local team, roller derby is an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Get your skates on
The Fearless Bruisers are always on the lookout for new members, whether you’re an experienced skater or just starting. They offer training sessions where you can learn the ins and outs of the game, meet other skaters, and become part of an empowering and supportive community. If you’re interested in giving roller derby a try, check out the Fearless Bruisers’ website for more information on how to join. There will be a ‘newbie’ day coming up in the fall, so you have no excuse, if you don’t have skates they can help you out!

In 2007, Laura completed her studies at an American university and applied for the Fulbright programme to be an English teacher in Germany or Austria. The wisest decision at this point: Austria! And the rest, as they say, is history.
