If you imagine the perfect winter evening, what would it look like? You've been out in the fresh air all day, worked up a sweat and now that it's getting dark, you retreat into the warmth. In a hut on the mountain, high above the lights of the villages in the valley. Outside, snowflakes dance in the wind, inside the fire crackles in the stove and the silence of the mountains feels like an embrace. No stress, no hustle and bustle - just peace and comfort. Well, it sounds cheesy to me, but absolutely perfect - the magic of a mountain hut. And that's exactly why I want to introduce you to huts in this post where you can spend the night even in the winter months.

Roßkogelhütte - Spend the night with a view of Innsbruck

The Rosskogelhütte at the Rangger Köpfl is located at 1,778 meters above sea level, just below the summit, and offers a fantastic view of Innsbruck and the Tyrolean lowlands. The Rangger Köpfl is a real winter paradise: Not only can you go skiing and snowboarding here, but also cross-country skiing and tobogganing. My blog colleague Theresa has written a great article about this. She takes a look behind the scenes and shows how much work is required to offer us winter sports enthusiasts a perfect experience.

Kilometers of tobogganing fun

For me the family-friendly toboggan run on Rangger Köpfl is simply unbeatable - I love it and regularly go there with my family. For anyone who wants to find out more about one of the longest toboggan runs in the region - I've already written a blog post about it. The destination of our tobogganing excursions is always the Rosskogelhütte. It not only scores points with its breathtaking views, but also with really good home cooking. We take thePeter-Anich I and II 8-seater gondola lifts to Sulzstich and hike to the hut from there. Since this year, there is also the Peter-Anich III combined lift, which takes you directly to the summit and from there you can ski down to the Roßkogelhütte.

From bed straight to the slopes

An overnight stay right next to the slopes? I imagine that would be fantastic! Typical for a mountain hut, there are dormitory beds (don't forget your sleeping bag), cozy double rooms and multi-bed rooms, two showers and two toilets. Before hitting the slopes again the next day, you can fortify yourself with a delicious breakfast - just the thing after a night in the mountains. Overnight stays are possible throughout the week during the winter season. Reservations can be made by e-mail or telephone - but I recommend calling directly. It's usually quicker and less complicated.

Schutzhaus Patscherkofel - Spend the night on Innsbruck's local mountain

The Patscherkofel is more than just a mountain - it is one of Innsbruck's landmarks, just as famous as the Golden Roof and the Nordkette mountain range. With its striking, round peak and the transmission mast, it towers south of the city. From the "Kofel", as the locals affectionately call it, you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view as far as the Wipptal valley. Only 6.5 kilometers from Innsbruck, the Patscherkofel is child's play to reach - either with the free ski bus in winter, it transforms into Innsbruck's skiing paradise, and you can still feel a bit of the Olympics in the air: after all, the Patscherkofel was the venue for Olympic ski races in 1964 and 1976, and competitions in the ice channel also took place here. If the slopes were good enough for the Olympics, they are certainly good enough for us!

A shelter with tradition

If you don't want to ski back down to the valley at the end of the slopes, you can spend the night on the Patscherkofel - in the charming Patscherkofel refuge. The historic stone building at almost 2,000 meters was built back in 1887 as the "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Schutzhaus". But don't worry, you don't have to do without modern amenities such as hot water here. It is also just a few steps away from the cable car - so no strenuous walk is required. The Schutzhaus offers cozy two-, three- and four-bed rooms, which are best booked by phone (e-mail is also possible, of course). The Schutzhaus is known for its excellent Tyrolean cuisine. The day starts here with a hearty breakfast before heading back to the slopes. Perfect for all winter sports enthusiasts!

Neue Alplhütte - Spend the night at the foot of the Mieminger Kette

The Mieminger Plateau offers countless hiking and excursion possibilities in both summer and winter. A real highlight is the New Alplhüttewhich is idyllically situated at 1,504 meters above sea level on the southern main ridge of the Mieminger Kette. As the saying goes: "Many roads lead to Rome." The same also applies to the Neue Alplhütte! You can start the hike there either from Telfs or from Wildermieming. While the ascent from Telfs takes around two and a half hours, the variant from Wildermieming is slightly shorter and takes around two hours. I opted for the shorter route and still got slightly out of breath (and I'm not proud of that).

A winter dream

When it has snowed and nature rests under a thick white blanket, a Snowshoe hike to the hut is an absolute winter highlight. The tour starts at the (paid) hiking parking lot above Wildermieming and leads east to the Straßberghaus (not open) in around an hour. From there, it takes another hour below the impressive Mieminger Kette to the New Alplhütte. Even if - like me - you don't wear snowshoes, the hike is highly recommended! Once you arrive at the hut, you can enjoy some well-earned refreshments. As I said, I worked up quite a sweat on the ascent and really enjoyed the break in this rustic hut.

Sport, celebrations, overnight stay

If you like - and this is highly recommended - you can spend the night in the hut and descend the next day. There are various rooms and a dormitory for up to 20 people. The Neue Alplhütte is also perfect for family celebrations or company outings. "Everyone is welcome here," says Daniel Thurnbichler, the chef and cook. Only wedding parties prefer to celebrate somewhere else. So if you are looking for a quiet hut in an idyllic location, this is the place for you.

Lehnberghaus - Spend the night away from the hustle and bustle

I like skiing, but sometimes the hustle and bustle on the slopes of the well-known (and rightly popular) ski resorts is just too much for me. Then there are two options: stay at home or find an alternative winter sport - such as tobogganing, ski touring or snowshoeing. The Lehnberghaus in the Mieminger mountains, at 1,153 meters above sea level, is perfect for this. It is the destination for tobogganists and hikers and a popular ski touring base for ski tourers.

The climb is worth it

The ascent to the Lehnberghaus is a beautiful winter hikewhich takes about an hour and 15 minutes - at least according to the signs at the starting point, the Arzkasten parking lot. My family and I took a little longer. But that's normal with children, isn't it? All the families we met along the way had similar "challenges". Meanwhile, the ski tourers and snowshoe hikers passed us by at a rapid pace. But don't worry, everyone made it in the end. Our destination was the Lehnberghaus. Many others continued on from there.

The Lehnberghaus is not only a beautiful hiking destination, but also an ideal Ski touring base. So why not spend the night here and set off on your tour the next morning? The accommodation options are typical for a mountain hut: you can choose between dormitories (don't forget your sleeping bags), double rooms and multi-bed rooms. If you don't want to carry your own luggage, you can even request luggage transportation. As with most huts, bookings are best made by telephone. The Lehnberghaus is known for its down-to-earth and delicious home cooking. The Lehnberghaus is an absolute dream for anyone looking for the peace and quiet of the winter mountains.

The Mittergrathütten - spending the night in the winter sports area at over 2000 meters

Last but not least, I have a tip for all those who are looking for a hut that they can have all to themselves - just for their friends or family, without having to share it with others. Not far from the Winter sports resort of Kühtaia winter paradise at over 2,000 meters above sea level, you will find the Mittergrathütten. All three huts are self-catering huts and can only be rented in their entirety - there are no individual rooms and no bookings for just one night (minimum stay: two days). The Große Mittergrathütte offers space for up to 30 people, the Kleine Mittergrathütte for up to 8 people and the Hemerwaldalm for up to 18 people. The ascent takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and luggage is conveniently transported by cable car.

One thing is certain: an overnight stay in a hut is always fun! Whether you don't want to drive back down to the valley after a party, want to hit the slopes the next morning or simply want to enjoy the wonderful mountain world - an overnight stay in a hut is always a special experience.
