Shining on the World Stage
The Roller Derby World Cup (RDWC) 2025 in Innsbruck has come and gone, but the excitement and energy from the event still linger. Over four unforgettable days, 48 teams (two having to cancel last minute) from around the world descended on Olympiaworld to compete in one of the biggest roller derby events in history. The city was full, Roller Derby merchandise around the city couldn’t be ignored! While the competition was fierce, one team in particular showed just how far Innsbruck’s roller derby scene has come: the Fearless Bruisers.

Innsbruck’s the Epicenter
The city was transformed into the epicenter of roller derby, with roller derby players, fans, staff and volunteers flooding the streets. At Olympiaworld arena the massive merchandise zone felt like a roller derby bazaar, with teams from around the globe selling t-shirts, pins, and gear, creating a colorful, buzzing hub of activity. Some players even had custom trading cards they exchanged! A member of the Black Diaspora Team, athlete Wheelameana Strikespear, even signed and gave me her card! The atmosphere at the stadium was epic, deafening, energetic! This event was massive, a huge undertaking for the Fearless Bruisers, but they proved that Innsbruck is a vibrant hub for the sport and a city with a growing roller derby scene.

Fairness Through Flexibility
One of the most unique and impressive aspects of the RDWC 2025 was its Accelerated Swiss format—a dynamic tournament structure that ensured fairness and competitive balance throughout the four-day event. Instead of fixed brackets or group play, matchups were based on team performance, allowing the competition to evolve organically.
To kick things off, teams were divided into a top half and bottom half, based on previous results, pre-tournament scrimmages, and self-assessments. This flexible seeding respected the wide range of experience and access to competition across the international derby scene.

- Day 1 (Thursday, July 3): Teams in each half were randomly matched against others in the same group. A win earned 1 point; a loss, 0 points.
- Day 2 (Friday, July 4): Matchups were determined by Day 1 results—teams with the same number of win points faced off, with further seeding based on winning margins to keep the matchups close and exciting.
- Days 3 & 4 (Saturday & Sunday, July 5–6): Teams were now drawn from the entire pool, with matchups based on total win points regardless of their original half. This ensured more evenly matched and thrilling bouts as the stakes rose.
- The top 8 teams advanced to the Quarterfinals on Saturday evening, with the Semifinals and Finals held on Sunday.
There were half time performances from four main groups : Tier Leaders, Scrimmage People, Dust City Dancers and Fearless Leaders - providing half time performances that got the crowd pumped! Some performed on skates others without but all were immensely entertaining! Day four also featured a parade, showcasing each team, where they could present themselves, and take a lap around the arena in front of a cheering public.

Inclusivity and Empowerment
The RDWC 2025 was a true reflection of this inclusive spirit. From the parade presenting all the teams, to the thrilling finals, to the half-time shows that added entertainment and flair, the event showcased the global roller derby community's commitment to diversity, empowerment, and equality. The entire venue pulsed with energy — from the multiple courts hosting back-to-back games, to the vast food court. Everyone was incredibly social and happy, embodying the best of what derby culture represents.

In 2007, Laura completed her studies at an American university and applied for the Fulbright programme to be an English teacher in Germany or Austria. The wisest decision at this point: Austria! And the rest, as they say, is history.
