Just the thought of the Christkind makes children’s eyes start to sparkle. Why? Because this angelic being with gold curly hair brings the Christmas presents in Austria. No child has ever seen the Christkind – no matter how hard they try, he has always “just flown away”. And Santa Claus? He poses ever increasing competition for the Christkind – spurring more and more people to become committed to preserving the old tradition.

The “Christkindleinzug” parade in Innsbruck is a celebration of faith in baby Jesus, embodied by the Christkind. Hundreds of children dressed as angels and shepherds parade through the city, accompanied by Christmas songs, fanfares and a walking nativity scene.

The procession spreads Christmas spirit as it passes along Maria Theresien Street, Marktgraben, Herzog-Otto-Straße and Herrengasse. The parade finally comes to an end in front of the Tyrolean State Theatre where 500 children sing the Austrian Christmas carol that has conquered the world: “Silent Night”.
