The exhibition features artworks and objects from Matthias Krinzinger’s collection that engage in a close dialogue with his own works. The collection includes, on the one hand, classic collectibles such as stamps, coins, minerals, fossils, and cigarette packs. On the other hand, it includes contemporary art that Krinzinger has been collecting since his early student days. The objects and artworks were found, purchased, exchanged with colleagues, or received as gifts.
Based on provenance, materiality, and formal affinities, diverse connections to Krinzinger’s artistic practice emerge. The act of collecting artworks and collectibles reveals his interest in the everyday, in utilitarian and play objects, and points to central aspects of his approach. At first, commonalities become apparent—similar items are paired with similar ones. Further connections often only reveal themselves at second glance: the boundary between artwork and collectible begins to blur, and classifications shift.
The collection is understood as a dynamic network of relationships: it can be continually reimagined and rearranged—as its scope grows, ever new connections and interrelationships can emerge. In conjunction with Krinzinger’s works, a multi-layered system thus becomes tangible, revealing the close interconnection between collecting, organizing, and artistic production.
