Exhibition: MARTIN PILSER – 75:
To mark the 75th birthday of the Innsbruck-based artist Martin Pilser, we are presenting some of the latest works from his magnificent series of colored-pencil drawings, selections from an earlier series in oil pastel, as well as monochrome graphite drawings, on display for the first time. Martin Pilser studied painting under Prof. Anton Lehmden at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later transferred to the master class for stage design under Prof. Lois Egg. At the same time, he was selected by Ernst Fuchs for his studio and hired as a freelance collaborator. This influence is also palpable in the artist’s unique colored pencil works, which slowly evolve through a continuous creative process, building up like stage sets while simultaneously encompassing a seemingly infinite visual world and formal language with echoes of the ‘Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.’ However, Pilser replaces the “Viennese” element in the spirit of his own
artistic vision with profound impressions from an early study trip to South America, paired with local “Tyrolean” influences—which find their way into his work just as much as current sociopolitical themes. Over the course of several weeks, Martin Pilser develops complex colored-pencil paintings on paper, often of the greatest density and intensity.
