AUSTERRA
From Terra – from the earth: clay – Grown from the earth: straw
Mother Earth: the nurturing ground of life
Building itself: something thoroughly human and natural—shelter, home, comfort, protection from the forces of nature, a place of retreat.
At the end of a house’s life cycle: straw and clay return to the earth, become part of Terra once more, are composted, and reabsorbed into the natural cycle.
AUSTERRA extracts clay from the earth, making it tangible, experiential, and perceptible. Building becomes something concrete, collective, and shared. Natural building becomes livable—direct, honest, raw, and archaic. Sensuality, warmth, scent, and security. A tiny grain is planted in the earth. The grain is full of energy. Nature works in harmony—nutrients, flora and fauna, wind and weather, the seasons, and the sun’s rays release the grain’s energy. A slender, delicate, and golden-shimmering plant stretches toward the sky and bathes its ears of grain in sunlight. The energy-filled grains are harvested from the ears.
