Forget plastic sledges in the park—tobogganing in Innsbruck is the ultimate family day out. You hike up a mountain for an hour or two, have a family picnic at the top, and then cruise back down on your trusty wooden toboggan. Even little kids can take part in the fun: many toboggan tracks can be reached by cable car, and the toboggans are big enough for parents and small children to ride back down together. Throw in a good snowball fight along the way and you’ve got an experience the kids won’t forget in a hurry.

There are many amazing family-friendly toboggan tracks in the Innsbruck region, here are three of our favourites.

Muttereralm: Best For Tots

The Muttereralm ski resort is known for its family-friendly skiing, but did you know that it’s also the ideal place for family-friendly tobogganing? The “Familienrodelbahn” toboggan track is a gentle yet fun slide down the mountain with a great view over Innsbruck. The track starts at the top of the gondola, so it’s easy to access with little kids who maybe can’t walk so far, and ends at the mid-station, where you can take the lift back up and do it all again!

But be careful, Muttereralm is also home to the slightly scarier “Sportrodelbahn” toboggan track, which is less about family fun and more about adrenaline. Make sure you find the right track at the top of the gondola!

Kühtai: Best For Children

As one of the highest altitude ski resorts in Austria, Kühtai is home to some stunning scenery. If snowy Alpine peaks are your thing, you won’t be disappointed here!

The Kühtai toboggan track is a great option for families with slightly older kids. The track isn’t served by a ski lift, however it is only a 45-minute trek to the top and a good challenge for sporty kids (or parents prepared to pull them up on the sledge!). The ride down is fairly gentle and there aren’t too many tight bends, making it easy for children to navigate on their own toboggan. The track is even floodlit at night (check the website for opening times), so you can have family fun on the mountain under the starry Alpine sky.

Oberperfuss: Best For The Whole Family

This charming little ski resort is home to one of the region’s longest toboggan tracks, a whopping 10km in length. But you don’t have to walk 10km uphill. You can take Oberperfuss’s two-part gondola right to the top and start your descent from there. Alternatively, you can take the lift halfway and enjoy a wholesome family hike the rest of the way (the kids will love it once you get going, honest!).

But of course, at 10km, the best part of this toboggan track is the coming down. The Oberperfuss track has a gradient that is neither too steep nor too flat, and you can definitely pick up some speed if you take your feet off the floor! But if you don’t feel the need for speed as much as your children do, you can simply cruise down, take in the beautiful scenery and remember how wonderful it is to be in the mountains.
