After a night at the Bettelwurfhütte, the eagle's nest of the Karwendel, all fit mountaineers who feel fit and have the necessary physical and technical equipment have the option of climbing the Großer Bettelwurf. First head eastwards, well signposted, into the trench where the trail leads up from the Halltal valley and then continue climbing south-eastwards to the ‘Eisengattergrat’, the southern ridge of the Großer Bettelwurf. From here, head north, steadily uphill along the Eisengattergrat ridge towards the summit until you reach the rocky outcrop and the first passages secured by wire ropes. The following via ferrata, which is partly secured and partly easy climbing (I) on limestone with good grip, now leads mostly to the right of a diagonal gully down to the summit ridge, overcoming some exposed rock ledges. Via ferrata equipment and a helmet are highly recommended. The climb becomes somewhat steeper towards the top. Shortly below the summit ridge, the path splits, with the left-hand path, seen from below, being easier to negotiate. At the summit ridge, keep to the east and follow a narrower section of ridge, exposed on both sides, to the summit cross. From the summit, take the same route back to the Bettelwurfhütte.

Those not climbing the Großer Bettelwurf can use the time to rest and relax at the Bettelwurfhütte. From the hut, everyone can then take trail no. 222 uphill and downhill back to the Lafatscher Joch (2081 m). There you branch off in a northerly direction onto path 223. Passing between Lafatscher, Roßkopf and Speckkarspitze, the hike now leads in a northerly direction downhill into the wide, gravelled cirque. You soon reach the so-called ‘Durchschlag’, which was once blasted out as a connection between Halleranger and Halltal. A few hairpin bends lead down through a gravel field and finally through a beautiful forest to the Hallerangerhaus in the heart of the Karwendel.
