Start your hike at the tourist information centre. From here you have two routes to choose from, both of which lead to the Finstertal reservoir: The first option takes you via Wiesberg and the Drei-Seen-Hütte and takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to the reservoir's dam wall. Alternatively, you can choose the route past Hotel Vaya and through the Finstertal valley, which takes around 1.5 hours.
From the dam wall, continue your hike on trail AV146 along the reservoir until it ends. Shortly before the steep ascent to the Sulzkogel, the entrance to the Finstertaler Scharte (AV146) leads to the left, which you reach after about 1.5 hours. From there, follow the signs to the Gubener/Schweinfurter Hütte and continue on the AV146.
The return journey then follows the same route as the outward journey so that you can experience the wonderful views and impressive terrain again.
This tour is a moderately difficult hike that is both physically demanding and offers breathtaking views.
