'Interlude' is a performance by Julie Carrere about a mascot who, after another shift spent entertaining passers-by, returns to a state of rest and wishes to rediscover themselves. Yet they cannot escape the circumstances in which they find themselves: an audience is present, waiting for something to happen. Although the space offers a temporary refuge, even moments of retreat remain shaped by the gaze of others. What begins as a break gradually slips back into a performance. Inside the costume, another space emerges – an in-between realm that constantly shifts between concealment and visibility. From fragments of rehearsed choreographies, performative patterns, lingering moments, frustrations and more or less timid attempts at engagement, a dance emerges that oscillates between control and the breaking down of boundaries. Gradually, the figure of a foolish rat emerges, opening up a space for unplanned movements. By playing with one’s own limitations, new possibilities arise – in the in-between space, in the costume and in the movement itself.
Throughout this process, the rat and Julie Carrere were engaged in a constant negotiation of their relationship with one another, with the spaces they traversed, and with the presumed expectations of an imaginary audience. This cycle comes to a close at the moment of being observed: a connection is formed through familiar gestures, a glance, the sound of a distant song, physical proximity or the wind blowing through the open windows.
