In *Un ballo in maschera*, Giuseppe Verdi – as in many of his works – transforms a historical event into a gripping operatic drama about power and loyalty: the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden. Musically, a breathtaking narrative unfolds: sumptuous love melodies clash with seething unrest, and courtly light-heartedness with sombre forebodings. Director Jasmina Hadžiahmetović opens the season on 26 September in the Main Theatre with this work, which straddles the line between a drama of jealousy and a political thriller.
