The Moosalm, beautifully situated on the sunny plateau with a view of the breathtaking Mieminger chain, has been run by Melina Reijonen, the fourth generation, since December 2023. Her great-grandmother opened a simple inn at the Barwieser Mooswiesen meadows over 70 years ago. Today, the Moosalm is popular with locals and guests alike. It is easy to reach by car and is also an ideal starting point for hikes on the Mieminger Plateau. A food festival was held there on the weekend of September 28 and 29. "Regionality plays a big role for us. The quality of the ingredients is crucial," says the trained chef. With the festival, Melina and her boyfriend Florian wanted to give their suppliers and partners a stage and introduce the guests of the Moosalm to the people behind the products. A wonderful idea and a great festival that I was able to attend with my family.

A young boss with a clear vision

Regional delicacies were offered at various stands. Farmers, hunters and distillers - in short, the suppliers - gave interested guests an insight into their work, their philosophy and how their products are made. And best of all: you were allowed to try everything. Melina was kind enough to show me around a little. She says: "I have taken over the Moosalm and want to show what is important to me and how we work right from the start." When I asked her if she sources all her ingredients from the region, she answered in the affirmative: "Around 90 percent come from the surrounding area. The exception may be very large events, such as weddings." I am impressed by this young woman who has a clear vision, which she pursues with determination - and who has managed to put on a wonderful party together with her boyfriend Florian.

Game from the region - quality that impresses

Fresh venison, or game meat, is available from May to December, but is particularly popular in the fall. The Food Festival offered the opportunity to talk to the hunters in person and taste delicious game products. To be honest, as a vegetarian I didn't try anything, but as always I rely on the taste of my husband and sons when it comes to meat - and they were delighted. The Moosalm gets its game meat from the Barwies-See hunting association, whose hunting tenants are Melina's father, Michael Gäns, and Franz Pirktl. Anyone who orders game here knows exactly where it comes from! There was also well-prepared information about hunting, especially for younger visitors. Because anyone who thinks that hunting is only about killing animals is mistaken: hunting has developed into a sustainable use of natural resources and serves to protect animal populations and habitats.

Barbecue party

In addition to the delicious game specialties, there were of course many other tasty treats. I'm responsible for cooking at home, and let's be honest: preparing meat is not exactly my strong point. Maybe that's why my family was so excited when they saw the selection. But I'm sure grilled steak strips, smokey brisket sandwiches, pulled pork burgers and spare ribs make most meat lovers' hearts beat faster - especially when you're there to see how everything is freshly prepared. And of course, this meat also comes from regional farmers. But don't worry, we vegetarians didn't have to starve either!

The Mieminger Plateau and its farm shops

Caramelized sheep's cheese from Roppen or - in keeping with the season - delicious pumpkin soup could be enjoyed at the stand of Hånsl's farm shop stand. We always enjoy visiting the farm store in Wildermieming, especially in summer when they serve delicious ice cream. The Mieminger Plateau is known to be particularly suitable for hiking. If we only want to go for a short walk, we often opt for this walk and make a detour to Hånsl's farm store. Speaking of farm stores: at the Food Festival, the Steirerhof from Obermieming could not be missing. It supplies the Moosalm with eggs and served delicious Kasspazln and chicken sausage specialties at the weekend.

High-proof enjoyment with a regional character

Michael Flunger from Mötz had top-quality high-proof spirits on offer at his stand. His specialties include Gincrystal-clear Tyrolean Alpine water and the finest grain form the basis. 100 percent natural ingredients, no oils, no essences - just gin. Of course, his range also includes schnapps, first and foremost the Williams, which won an award at the World Cup. His other brandies have also won awards. Beer and wine lovers also get their money's worth: "We make sure that our wines come from Austria," explains Melina, "and when it comes to beer, we trust our Bavarian neighbors." In short, the Moosalm also focuses on regionality and top quality when it comes to alcoholic beverages.

Hopefully see you next year

The first Food Festival at the Moosalm was a complete success. Melina did a great job organizing the festival and I naturally wanted to know whether it would be held every year. "Yes, that's definitely the plan, but I can't say exactly how and in what form at the moment," explains the young landlady. It was a wonderful party, and in the end we were all full to the brim but extremely satisfied. Not only was there plenty to eat and drink, there was also plenty of entertainment: musicians provided a great atmosphere and the children had fun on the playground and in the bouncy castle. The weather couldn't have been better, the food couldn't have been more delicious and the atmosphere couldn't have been happier! A perfect fall weekend - and definitely not our last visit to the Moosalm.
