Let's hear it for nature!

Only about 20 villages in Austria have been classified as "mountaineering villages". The villages of Sellrain, Gries im Sellrain and St. Sigmund im Sellrain belong to this exclusive circle. They are all located 20 to 30 kilometres away from Innsbruck and give visitors access to a world of alpine wonder full of natural flair. Being a mountaineering village means: alpine character, original surroundings and archaic charm. It also stands for regeneration, pristine nature and authenticity – far away from après-ski and cable cars. Here nature is allowed to be nature. The mountaineering villages are located between over 1,200 and 1,500 metres above sea level and are surrounded by the most beautiful mountain peaks. Yet they are still only 30 minutes away from Innsbruck.

The mountaineering villages in summer

In summer, flowering alpine meadows dominate the landscape. High up in the mountains, the alpine roses glow a cheerful pink. The mountaineering villages of the Sellrain Valley are particularly beautiful destinations when the alpine roses are in bloom. You can enjoy long hikes, family trails, wildlife watching, summit tours and rock climbing. For experienced hikers who are in good shape, we recommend multi-day hikes from hut to hut – for example the Sellrain mountain hut tour.

The mountaineering villages in winter

Snow-capped mountains and complete tranquillity undisturbed by the whir of ski lifts. Instead all you'll hear while out snowshoeing is the sound of the snow crunching underfoot. The Sellrain Valley is home to idyllic cross-country ski tracks and toboggan runs, as well as unique ski touring routes. The mountaineering villages also have excellent ice climbing terrain. You can see which waterfalls are suitable for ice climbing in our list.
