A dance piece by Enrique Gasa Valga set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and music by Roberto Tubaro
Mary Magdalene: sinner, saint, lover, witness. Caught between slander and veneration, her true story remains shrouded in the twilight of tradition to this day. Choreographer Enrique Gasa Valga approaches this enigmatic female figure with the power and intimacy of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion - one of the most moving works in the history of music. Amid chorales and arias, a dance performance emerges that makes faith, desire, guilt, and redemption tangible as a physical experience.
In the title role: the extraordinary Oumy Cisse, whose dance gives Mary Magdalene a voice beyond words. In the role of Judas, an actor weaves Bach’s musical Passion with spoken word, drawing the audience deep into this timeless story.
The team responsible for the set design and costumes - which previously caused a sensation with the acclaimed hit production Saving Salvador - A Tribute to Dalí returns: Birgit Edelbauer-Heiss is responsible for the costumes, and Alberto Talarico and Valeria Angesi for the set design. Together, they create a space that bridges the sacred and the sensual, where Bach’s music, dance, and narrative merge into a moving total work of art.
