Anyone who has been on Instagram in the Innsbruck area in recent weeks can hardly have missed it: Gusto Guerilla, the culinary adventure on two wheels, was visiting Innsbruck.
For the second time, the Gusto Guerilla Tour for foodies has left its mark in Innsbruck. Good food, exercise in the fresh air and the joy of discovery not only go together perfectly on the mountain, but also in the city.
10 restaurants in one day
The concept behind the event is refreshing, simple and ingenious: a number of foodies limited to a maximum of 250 participants have time to test up to 10 restaurants on a Saturday between 11:00 and 18:00. The participating restaurateurs prepare a small sample for each guest and are available to answer questions and give a tour of their own four walls. So everyone can go at their own pace, eat and chat - and also decide the order of the 10-course menu themselves.
"A Gusto Guerilla Tour in Innsbruck makes a lot of sense: thanks to the incredibly high density of different eateries and restaurants and the commitment of our hosts, you can discover a culinary novelty around every corner in Innsbruck. So you can look forward to an exciting, varied and, above all, delicious tour on both dates in 2025," says Victoria Strallhofer from Culinary Craft Tourswho is implementing the Vienna-based concept for the Innsbruck location. We meet her right at the start at Pippilotta, where she is available to answer questions.
After a few last bits of information, we're off. We taste our way through the various stations. Here's a little insight into what the 10 restaurateurs had prepared this time.
1. Beetle bean strudel at Pippilotta
Right at the beginning, we dive into the world of microgreens from the local company Bergblatt and the good ideas of the Styrian chef Günter Simbürger, who wields the cooking spoon here. For today's tasting, the chic restaurant on the first floor of the Education Directorate serves a super crispy Käferbohnenstrudel, with wild garlic sauce, a skillfully placed dollop of puree and a few nasturtium sprouts.
An unusual start that sets the bar extremely high. The dish is light, delicious and makes you want to try the Pippilotta again soon.
2. Croquette at Maria Theresa
The most important news in advance: For all those who haven't entered the location since the opening of the Maria Theresias and the weeks that followed: do it. With pictures, tiles, wall paint and plants, the former shell charm is gone once and for all. But now to the culinary part: this comes in the form of a perfect croquette (vegetarian or with meat, depending on your choice). Here filled with quail, beautifully cheesy, hot and with a slightly sour sauce underneath. Topped with the already familiar mircogreens - which not only harmonize visually. Now for the bad news: the croquettes are not (yet) on the regular menu. But maybe at the next Gusto Guerilla event in September..
3. Burgers at Zum Wohl Tirol
The second shop is currently "Gringo‘s Tacoria" is causing more of a stir than the now well-established burger joint Zum Wohl Tirol - BUT, who can resist a small burger at lunchtime?
The burger is fresh, the bread is soft, the meat is seared slightly pink, the cheese melts away and the bacon is salty and crispy. Plus the crunchy salad greens... yes, there's absolutely nothing to complain about here. I'd love to eat it again and then in a big way!
4. Lasagne at Mangiami
Italian for beginners: "Eat me" is the name of the little store Mangiami on the corner at Terminal, from which it smells so delicious. Especially nice: the colorful little tables in front of it. On the food tour, you can try either a small pizza or a lasagne. The lasagne is hot, spicy and slightly tangy - it really has everything a lasagne should have.
We've now put the primo pasta dish at the back of the list, but that doesn't matter. We are now all the closer to the first dessert on our tour! Let's move on to the Munding.
5. Golden Munding moment
In the Munding there is a lot to tell - historical, culinary and about each other at the table. The oldest coffee house in Innsbruck has a whole host of exciting facts to tell, and Veronika gives us a tour of the premises. In the entrance area is the glassed-in counter, behind which the finest patisserie masterpieces are piled up. From my own experience, I can say that you can never go wrong here. Except not ordering anything, which would be fatal.
Back to our tour: there is a golden shingle as a taster. Ideal if time is already running out and you want to save the sweet treats for later.
6. + 7. Inns Fachl: Weber mustard & Alpengold
There are two stops on this tour in front of the popular shop in Riesengasse "Inn's Fachl" Store in the Riesengasse. The hottest tip in town for gifts to suit every taste. Culinary, fashionable or even jewelry - there's plenty of variety here. The two products Weber Mustard and alpine herb liqueur from Alpengold can also be found here.
For a good tasting, there are small pieces of cheese and sausage with mustard pairing (yes, please!) and next door a sip of the liquid gold from Innsbruck.
9. The food tour continues: Genießerei
The penultimate stop on our tour takes us across the Sill to the end of the Rapoldiparks in Die Genießerei. Here we are welcomed by Sandra and Alois, who first introduces us to the wine accompaniment. Normally there are only liquid delicacies for sale here, but you can also join themed evenings with tastings or have a small private event organized. You can try ham on a toasted roll with raisins, a potato tortilla and a sip of gazpacho with olive oil, accompanied by the sparkling Vinho Verde from Portugal in a tumbler.
9. Soft ice cream in the coffee bar
A very sociable atmosphere awaits us in the Coffee party. People sit around, chat and drink coffee. Or matcha. We, on the other hand, try the oat milk soft serve ice cream, which is served in a cup with two toppings of your choice. Even though there are probably many other good combinations, let me tell you: raspberry and pistachio is unbelievably good. Yes, you can and should make this more often!
10. Brunch tasting in the Schmeckeria
Finally, there's a small best-of of the brunch menu in the Schmeckeria at Sonnenburgstraße 12, a fried quail egg on avocado bread and a hearty tarte flambée. You can enjoy it here either indoors in a hipster-clean look with great wallpaper (find the marten!) or in the guest garden, which definitely enriches and enlivens the square!
Tastes good and is fun
A really nice concept and a good opportunity to spend a day exploring new and old restaurants in the city and to go out and about with like-minded people.
Actually, the concept could be expanded at will: by e-bike to the city's alpine pastures for cheese dumplings and Swiss stone pine schnapps... Or a pure kebab tour with the eight best candidates, as my companion dreams of, that would be something!
In any case, I'm already looking forward to the next round on September 20 in Innsbruck and am delighted that such a wonderful event has found its way to Innsbruck!
