Axams and Axamer Lizum, a place with Olympic history

Axams has hosted two Olympic Games. During the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, the best skiers in the world competed in races held in the nearby ski resort of Axamer Lizum. The ski area is still popular today thanks to its great pistes and wonderful location: the resort offers particularly beautiful views of the impressive Kalkkögel mountain range, known as the "Dolomites of the North" thanks to its rugged peaks. The quickest and most convenient way up to the sunny Hoadl plateau is on the distinctive red Olympiabahn funicular. In winter, the resort is a snow-sure paradise for skiers and snowboarders – with lots of lifts and an amazing snow and fun park. True to the motto: the white roof meets the Golden Roof!

Tradition in autumn

During the authentic "Viehabtrieb", animals are brought down into the village from their summer pastures high up in the surrounding mountains. This event is held at a very early date at the beginning of September. It always starts with the big Axams sheep drive, when an impressive bustle of hundreds of sheep, goats, rams and tiny lambs accompanied by shepherds and helpers wander down the main road in Axams to the assembly point on the outskirts of the village. A few days later, the impressive, well-fed herds of cattle return home from their alpine pastures. The Kirchtagsschnöller (whip crackers) from Axams are also at the event and show off their whip cracking skills during the traditional "Goassl Schnöll'n" display.

A winter highlight

Tobogganing in Axams and Axamer Lizum. Sledging down the toboggan runs in Axams is always a special experience, not least because you are whizzing down into the valley entirely on natural snow. Our insider tip: the exclusive, illuminated natural toboggan run that starts in Axamer Lizum ski resort. The run is easily accessible during the day on the free ski buses or once in the evening on the free toboggan bus between the holiday villages of Götzens, Birgitz and Axams/Axamer Lizum. The 2-km-long natural Pleisenhütte toboggan run is known as a more snow-sure alternative for tobogganing until spring. Although it is located directly in Axamer Lizum ski resort, it is only accessible on foot. The walk up the natural toboggan run can be easily accomplished in about 1 hour. A short connecting section via the Schafalm mountain hut links the two toboggan runs, providing a total of 6 km of tobogganing fun down into the valley.

Axams leisure centre

The leisure centre in Axams offers water, wellness and relaxation year round. The open-air lap pool gives visitors the chance to cool off in summer, while the two diving towers and wave slide offer plenty of fun and action. In winter, the indoor area is wonderfully warm and features an indoor/outdoor pool, a lazy river and much more. A family highlight: the separate paddling, swimming and play area for kids. Go for a swim or relax with a book in the raised panoramic relaxation zone. The sauna experiences are also highly recommended. You can choose from a Finnish sauna, stone pine sauna, Kelo wood sauna and more. The Welcome Card gives you a big discount on admission fees for swimming at Axams leisure centre.

Axams and Axamer Lizum are popular hiking destinations

The mountains are dotted with rustic and modern alpine guesthouses that are inviting places to stop for a break in summer and winter alike. The Hoadlhaus in the resort of Axamer Lizum is one of the most beautiful. This restaurant is a modern glass building high up in the mountains that has huge windows with stunning views in all directions. It is a great place for soaking up the sun and ideal for taking a break when hiking or skiing.

"Wampelerreiten" in Axams

Tradition has become UNESCO cultural heritage: the carnival in Axams, or "Fosnacht" as it is known by the locals, is a big and spectacular event held here every year. This village west of Innsbruck is probably home to one of the most unconventional and roughest carnival customs in the area around Innsbruck. During the colourful celebrations, the characters wear precious, handcrafted costumes. The "Axamer Wampeler" and their "riders" assume the main role supported by many other traditional characters: noble Tuxer, Flitscheler, altboarische Paarln, Nadln, witches, Bujazzln, bears and bear handlers. The Wampelerreiten is a particularly special event and well-worth a visit. This custom has quite rightly been granted UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status.
