A place with an Olympic history

Around 10 - 15 kilometres from Innsbruck, Axams and the Axamer Lizum score points not only for their snow-sure downhill runs and extensive hiking trails, but also for their unique location: the imposing mountain massif of the Kalkkögel presents itself particularly beautifully here. Incidentally, their rugged peaks earned them the title "Dolomites of the North".
Axams is above all a place of living customs and traditions and has twice been the venue for the Winter Olympics. The world's best skiers competed in the nearby Axamer Lizum ski area in 1964 and 1976.

A popular recreational area and hiking destination

Rustic mountain huts and modern alpine guesthouses await when you are ready for a break or a bite to eat. One of the most beautiful is the Hoadlhaus in the resort of Axamer Lizum. This restaurant is a modern glass building located high up in the mountains at an altitude of 2,340 metres above sea level. The restaurant's huge windows offer stunning views in all directions. It simply doesn't get any better: Axamer Lizum overlooks the magnificent peaks of the Kalkkögel mountains and surrounding mountain ranges. Ideal for soaking up the sun and relaxing, especially during a hike or a ski day.

Axams leisure centre

The leisure centre in Axams offers water, wellness and relaxation year round. The open-air lap pool with its two diving towers and wave slide gives visitors the chance to cool off and have fun in summer. In winter, you can take advantage of the indoor area and the integrated indoor/outdoor pool. A family highlight: the separate paddling, swimming and play area for kids. Go for a swim or relax with a book in the raised panoramic relaxation zone. The Welcome Card gives you a discount on admission fees for swimming at Axams leisure centre.

Action in summer

Hone your motorbike style in perfect terrain or put your digger driving skills to the test – the Offroad Arena in Axams has the perfect challenge for everyone! Here you can enjoy a different kind of fun on the slopes – with an adventure guarantee for adrenaline junkies of all ages. Don't miss the spectacularly designed motocross area with its separate children's trail for kids aged.

Tradition in autumn

During the authentic "Viehabtrieb", animals are brought down into the village from their summer pastures high up in the surrounding mountains. This event is at the beginning of September. It always starts with the big Axams sheep drive. A few days later the herds of cattle return home from their alpine pastures. The Kirchtagsschnöller (whip crackers) from Axams are also at the event.

A winter highlight

A ride on the Axam toboggan runs is a special experience - not least because you are exclusively on natural snow here. The two-kilometre-long Pleisenhütte natural toboggan run is available until spring and can even be extended to six kilometres if the snow conditions are good. It leads via the selective Axam natural toboggan run down to the valley.

"Wampelerreiten" in Axams

Tradition has become UNESCO cultural heritage: the carnival in Axams, or "Fosnacht" as it is known by the locals, is a big and spectacular event held here every year. This village west of Innsbruck is probably home to one of the most unconventional and roughest carnival customs in the area around Innsbruck. During the colourful celebrations, the characters wear precious, handcrafted costumes. The "Axamer Wampeler" and their "riders" assume the main role supported by many other traditional characters: noble Tuxer, Flitscheler, altboarische Paarln, Nadln, witches, Bujazzln, bears and bear handlers. The Wampelerreiten is a particularly special event and well-worth a visit. This custom has quite rightly been granted UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status.
