Family hikes

Exploring the easy hiking trails in the mountains around Innsbruck is a wonderful way to spend your holiday and also lots of fun for children. Select a route from our network of family-friendly trails. Most family hikes include special highlights for children – either along the route or at the destination. For example playgrounds, an enchanted forest or flowing water to splash around in and discover nature.

A hike to the Rauschbrunnen mountain hut

This hike starts at "Marktgraben" bus stop in the centre of Innsbruck. From there, you take the A bus to the stop "Sadrach" and then head uphill to the left towards the Buzihütte mountain hut. From the Buzihütte, the route zigzags up through the forest to the Rauschbrunnen mountain hut at an altitude of 1,100 metres above sea level. There, you can stop for a break and a bite to eat before heading back down a different way: follow the forest road to Höttinger Bild chapel and then continue downhill along the Bildstöcklweg trail to the Planötzenhof restaurant. The bus stop for line A is just 5 minutes from the Planötzenhof. Our tip: It is well-worth making a short stop at the Höttinger Bild pilgrimage site. This small mountain chapel is located next to a fountain in an idyllic spot in the forest.

Hike to the Stöttlalm

The Stöttlalm is a mountain hut located in a lovely alpine setting along the popular Golf-Rundwanderweg trail. The hike takes about 45 minutes from the Lehnbach car park in Obermieming. The hut has a wonderful sun terrace and a rustic dining room where guests can enjoy delicious snacks and hearty alpine delicacies.

The Wildgrube hiking trail in Oberperfuss

Route no. 9. Above the Kammerland district, a road leads off to the left of the riding stables and continues past the Wildgrube chapel and the hamlet of Wildgrube to the Aigling district. The route then crosses the road and leads uphill to the edge of the forest. From there, the route turns left and runs alongside the forest with beautiful views, taking you to the district of Mairhof and then back along the road to Aigling. From Aigling, you can either follow the road or the Wildgrube back to Kammerland.

Hiking trail to the hamlet of Au in Oberperfuss

Route no. 9a. From the riding stables above the Kammerland district, a road turns off to the left and leads downhill to the "Au" district with views of the Sellrain Valley. From the hamlet of "Au", it is possible to extend the hike into the Sellrain Valley.

Wendelinsteig (trails 7 & 14) to the Rechenhof and Schönblick

Follow the shady Wendelinsteig trail (red & white trail markings, route number 7) from the starting point until you reach path number 14. Take path number 14 and follow it through the relatively flat terrain to the large crossroads called "Sieben Wege" (seven trails), where you can stop and enjoy a bite to eat at the Rechenhof alpine guesthouse, which is open year round. From there, continue along path number 14 until you come to a turnoff signposted to Arzl/Schießstand. A trail then leads off to the left towards route number 13, which initially takes you through green alpine meadows (an oasis of peace) before heading constantly downhill through the forest and diagonally crossing a road. The route then leads past a lovely small forest meadow with two benches before ending directly at Schönblick. From there, follow route number 15, which runs between the village of Arzl, the state shooting range and the Canisiusbrünnl alpine guesthouse. Return hike Follow route number 14 back to the starting point.

Wiesenweg 6 in Oberperfuss

Route no. 6. This wonderful hiking route with stunning views starts in the Kammerland district and takes you across alpine meadows to the edge of the woods before leading uphill along a section of the Haggenweg trail, left onto the upper Wiesenweg route and then back across the Plörlwiesen meadows to Kammerland.

Wildermieming – Bergdoktorhaus (short & long)

The Bergdoktorhaus is a building where the first six seasons of the successful TV series "Der Bergdoktor" were filmed. The house can still be admired today but only from the outside. Short route: For the short route, walk a few metres west and then take the first right onto Straßbergweg road. Follow the road for a few minutes until you see the Bergdoktorhaus. Long route: For the long route, hike a few metres east and then continue straight on Mühlgasse road to Lettenkapelle chapel. When you come to the turnoff, keep left and walk from the top of Straßbergweg road to the Bergdoktorhaus.

The Sonnbergalm Wunderwanderweg (wonder hiking trail)

This route starts from the car park at the Sonnbergalm mountain hut, located between St. Sigmund and Haggen behind the Krainhof. The route leads steadily uphill alongside a sunny forest. Along the way, it passes various stations that provide information about natural wonders such as alpine ibex populations and the age of the spruce forests. The Sonnbergalm has wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and excellent home-cooked food.  

Hike to the Papstkreuz cross

A short, family-friendly mountain tour starting from the Kemater Alm mountain hut with unique views of the impressive Kalkkögel mountain range the whole way. The route follows a forest road that leads along a stream towards the Adolf Pichler Hütte mountain hut. After walking for about 15 minutes, a hiking trail branches off to the left and leads across lush alpine meadows in gently rising hairpin bends up to the Papstkreuz cross. From there, you get stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Kemater Alm down below. The hike back to the starting point follows the same route. When you get back to the hut, it is possible to enjoy a break with a bite to eat. The Papstkreuz cross was built here in the Senders Valley in 1988 to commemorate Pope John Paul II's visit to Austria and Tyrol.
