Ski mountaineering in Innsbruck
In the Innsbruck region, there is not only a wide range of different ski touring routes, but also a huge variety of tours that lead from dreamy wintry valleys up to alpine mountaineering villages and on to sun-kissed plateaus. Whether you want to complete a tour entirely under your own steam, with the help of ski lifts and public transport or as a combination of all the above – just like the selection of suitable tours, the possibilities for the ascent are almost unlimited. Our highlights: the ski touring paradise along the Sellrain Valley and the sunny ski tours on the Mieming Plateau.
Ski touring paradise Sellrain Valley
The natural Sellrain Valley is our number one ski touring paradise.
Sunny ski tours on the Mieming Plateau
When the sun is shining and snow sparkles on the peaks, ski tourers' spirits soar.
Types of ski tours
Whether looking for an on-piste ski tour or an off-piste tour using ski lifts to help with the first few vertical metres, the Innsbruck region has the perfect tour for every taste, ability and fitness level. And best of all: many of the ski tours are easy to reach on public transport.
On-piste ski touring
Ski tours on groomed slopes are perfect for beginners. They give you a taste of ski touring while allowing you to slowly get to grips with this new and wonderful sport – without any danger of avalanches and without calling for additional avalanche equipment or extensive mountaineering experience. Important, please note: being able to ski is a requirement – after all, you want to be able to enjoy the ride down! Whether during the day or on one of the official ski touring evenings, the piste ski tours at Patscherkofel, Muttereralm, Axamer Lizum and Rangger Köpfl are always a joy!
Ski touring with lifts and cable cars
Would you like a relatively short climb followed by a seemingly endless ride down untouched slopes – with the rest of the day spent carving, shredding and enjoying dumplings in a ski resort? For off-piste skiers and anyone touring mostly for the ride down, tours near a ski area are ideal. Thanks to the lifts and cable cars, it is possible to cut out a large percentage of the climb, then you just tour up the last few metres to the summit before enjoying a run down that is double the fun! The ski resort of Kühtai is seemingly made for ski days like these – how about a quick tour up to Pirchkogel or Grieskogelscharte?
Our tip: the SKI plus CITY pass. This ticket gives you the flexibility to experience the peaks, pistes and slopes at several different ski areas.
Accessible by public transport
If you are arriving by train or plane and don't want to miss out on the winter fun, there's good news: in the Innsbruck region, you don't necessarily need a car to get out into nature or up into the mountains. You can simply pop your skis on your shoulder, walk to your nearest bus stop with your ski boots already on and take public transport to the start of your tour. This is not only an environmentally-friendly way to travel, it also saves you having to search for a parking space. Many destinations in the region can be reached by bus or tram – for example the Wetterkreuzkogel in Kühtai, the Axamer Kögele from Axams or the summit route on Patscherkofel.
Our tip: public transport in the Innsbruck region is free for anyone with the free Welcome Card!
Our additional tip:
the ATC Avalanche Training Center in Praxmar and Kühtai. This permanent facility helps visitors practice searching for avalanche victims using an avalanche transceiver and probe.
