Family hikes

Exploring the easy hiking trails in the mountains around Innsbruck is a wonderful way to spend your holiday and also lots of fun for children. Select a route from our network of family-friendly trails. Most family hikes include special highlights for children – either along the route or at the destination. For example playgrounds, an enchanted forest or flowing water to splash around in and discover nature.

Route 5a takes you on a short walk through the forest to the Burkter chapels, starting and ending at the tennis court.

Unterperfuss – Melachweg trail

From opposite the guesthouse "Gasthof Inntal" in Unterperfuss, take the path that leads east through the fields and follow it until you come to the Melach river. There, turn right and continue along the river until the path meets the main road. Cross the road and continue to the Unterperfuss old people's home. Then cross the wooden bridge and follow the path along the Kematen side of the river until you come to just above the Gutmann petrol station. There, cross the wooden bridge and follow the road back through the fields to Gasthof Inntal. 

The Vogellehrweg trail to Ehnbachklamm gorge

A wonderful forest trail that leads uphill through mixed woods and alpine meadows to Hochzirl (route no. 15). Various display boards line the route and provide information about indigenous birds. From the train station in Hochzirl, take route no. 51 towards the Ehnbachklamm gorge and then follow the Ehnbach stream through the romantic wilderness of the gorge (route no. 3). The route continues past a war memorial (route no. 1a) and then heads back to the starting point. It is also possible to walk the route in the other direction. The strange rock formations and diverse flora and fauna make a hike in the Karwendel mountains an unforgettable experience for every walker. Even on hot summer days, this hike along the cool babbling stream ensures relaxation for mind and soul. The area also contains a collection of orchids, which is unique within Tyrol. The narrow trail is well secured with footbridges and steps, as well as wire ropes.

From grain to bread

From the parking lot you walk along the avenue eastward to the shooting range and further uphill to the waterfall. Here starts the theme trail "From Grain to Bread", which offers a lot of fun for young and old with various interactive and educational stations. At the waterfall, walk right along the forest road through the forest past the various stations until the trail ends on an asphalt road. Here you turn right and come directly to the old mill. Then keep right again and follow the "Unterer Mühlenweg". At the next crossing turn left and return to the starting point. From March to December, the "Alte Mühle" is brought back to life every Saturday. Then the mill team bakes fresh bread, which is offered for sale.

From Unterperfuss to Itzlranggen and Hofschank Gutleben farm

A beautiful hike past cultural monuments and through the forest to Itzlranggen. From the centre of Unterperfuss (free parking is available at the Branger Alm), a paved road leads south to Ferklehen Castle. The route follows the edge of the forest until it meets the main road, continues west for about 100 meters and then turns right to follow a path over the fields and across a wooden bridge into the forest. The forest trail climbs slowly uphill until it comes to the last bend in the road to Itzelranggen. From there, the route follows the road as far as the first houses in Itzlranggen and then turns right to Hofschank Gutleben farm. Highlight: Pfarrkirche zur hl. Katharina (the Parish Church of St Catherine) in Unterperfuss, Peter Anich's beautiful sundial featuring the signs of the zodiac and a gnomon on the Brangerhof building owned by the Hörtnagel family in Unterperfuss, Ferklehen Castle (privately owned), the well in the village centre, the village fountain and the beautiful old farmhouses in the village.  

Waldweg trail no. 8 in Oberperfuss

From the free car park below the parish church, head west past Hotel Krone to the main road, walk north along the road for about 200 m and then keep left to follow a side road past flower-laden farmhouses to the Albiskapelle chapel. At the chapel, take a sharp left and follow the road straight on through the districts of Huebe and Völsesgasse, past the Zischgenkaplle, Hueberkapelle and Poltenkapelle chapels to the end of the village. From there, a path branches off to the right and takes you over alpine meadows, always staying near the edge of the forest, to the Inntalblick viewpoint. From the viewpoint, double back for a short distance until you come to the first turnoff. Keep left, follow the path back to Völsesgasse road and then head east along the road to the Huebe district. When you come to the yellow signpost on the left-hand side of the path, follow route no. 8 around the Hueberfeld field and back to the car park in the village centre. Highlights: a wonderful short hike, especially nice in the evening, comfortable benches by the edge of the forest where you can rest and enjoy, wonderful wide open views of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains.  

Hiking in the Karwendel mountains - Zirl

Hiking in a mountain range like the Karwendel Nature Park is a special experience! The area is literally calling out for you to explore its quiet expanses and unique nature. The exceptionally dense network of mountain huts also makes it ideal for exciting multi-day tours. The possibilities are almost endless, including simple hikes up to mountain huts, alpine tours along exposed ridges, long-distance multi-day hikes and much more. The Karwendel mountains are also a climbing paradise!

Hiking in the Karwendel Nature Park near Rum

Enjoy a hike in the largest nature reserve in Tyrol, the 730 m² "KARWENDEL NATURE PARK". The Rum section of the nature reserve is home to a hiking area with around 45 kilometres of well-maintained and well-signposted hiking trails, and has held Tyrol's official quality seal for hiking trails (the Tiroler Bergwegegütesiegel) since 1999. The Goetheweg trail is particularly recommended. This panoramic route has been awarded the title "Bergweg mit Auszeichnung" (mountain trail of excellence) thanks to its special natural beauty and its exemplary layout, maintenance and signposting. A large car park is available for our hikers free of charge. Our special hiking tip: visit the Rumer Alm mountain hut and enjoy wonderful views of Innsbruck from the south-facing terrace, while replenishing your energy levels with delicious alpine specialities. The hike starts at the Karwendel car park. The ascent takes just under 90 minutes. 

Hike on the Akademikersteig trail to Birgitz

The Akademikersteig is an easy forest trail that leads from the village of Götzens to the village of Birgitz in about 45 minutes. In Götzens, the path branches off below the M-Preis supermarket. The start of the trail offers beautiful views of the Vellenberg castle ruins. In Birgitz, the forest path ends at a road that leads south, directly to the village centre. Just before leaving the forest, you can take the turnoff towards the "Hohe Birga" excavation site. This archaeological site is about a five-minute walk away. The Rätermuseum (Raetic Museum) in the centre of Birgitz is also well worth a visit. The route can also be done in the opposite direction.   

A hike to the Seigesalm mountain hut

There are various different routes to the Seigesalm mountain hut. One option is to start from the free "Eisbrücke" car park, follow the path towards Bergheim Fotsch/Potsdamer Hütte for about 30 minutes, turn right onto the forest road to the Sattelalm hut (not open to the public) and then continue on to the Seigesalm from there. Alternatively, you can hike from the guesthouse car park at Almgasthof Berheim Fotsch and follow the route via the Almind-Alm mountain hut to the Seigesalm. Or you can hike up via Moosböden to the Sattelalm and then on to the Seigesalm mountain hut. The routes can be combined to create a great circular hike. At the Seigesalm mountain hut, you are rewarded with stunning views of the Inn Valley.
