The Innsbruck Almenweg (14)

This delightful and varied circular hike winds its way along above the western holiday villages around the Nockspitze (Saile) mountain. We recommend taking a lift up to the start of the Almenweg trail (the Muttereralmbahn gondola). The first section of the hike leads from the Muttereralm at an altitude of 1,608 metres above sea level via the Raitiser Alm hut at 1,553 metres above sea level to the Kreither Alm mountain hut at 1,402 metres above sea level. This part of the hike takes about an hour and follows a forest road that is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. From the Kreither Alm, the route joins an alpine path that climbs steadily up to the Pfarrachalm mountain hut in the Stubai Valley (1,740 metres above sea level). This section has beautiful views and takes about one hour and 30 minutes. Afterwards, the route climbs steeply again for another one and a half hours up to the Birgitzköpfl mountain at an altitude of 1,980 metres above sea level. From the Birgitzköplhaus, the route leads downhill through alpine meadows for about 45 minutes to the Birgitzer Alm mountain hut (1,803 metres). Finally, the trail leads gently downhill for another hour and a half, bringing you back to the Muttereralm. An easy route option is to hike from the Muttereralm to the Götzner Alm mountain hut (1,542 metres). This section is pushchair friendly and can be covered in 30 minutes. There are several spots along the way where you can turn off up to a summit or take a trail down into the valley. It is even possible to hike to a tram stop and do the return journey out of the Stubai Valley on the Stubaitalbahn tram (STB tramline).  The mountain huts are all open to the public (except for the Raitiser Alm) and are lovely places to take a break with home-made delicacies and magnificent views of the mountains that will make your heart and soul soar.  The entire circular hike takes about six hours (without breaks). It is therefore advisable to divide the Almenweg trail up into two or three stages or to choose individual sections. An unforgettable experience for true mountain lovers!

Way of St. James „Isar-Loisach-Leutascher Ache-Inn“

25.5 KM 25.5 KM

The route between Mittenwald and Telfs, the "Isar-Loisach-Leutascher Ache-Inn" section of the Way of St. James, is one of the absolute highlights along the Way of St. James in Tyrol. We recommend doing this section in two stages: the first from Mittenwald to Leutasch, the second from Leutasch via Telfs to Stams. The route starts with a dramatic highlight, as the pilgrims pass through the romantic wilderness of the Leutasch Gorge in Mittenwald. The stage then continues along the shimmering emerald waters of the Leutascher Ache river to the village of Leutasch. Along the way, one mountain in particular becomes an increasingly prominent feature up ahead of the swift and peaceful pilgrims: Hohe Munde. After Leutasch, the route leads downhill for the first time, passing through fragrant larch forests and past ancient, painted farmhouses towards Telfs. It is possible to go via the peace bell in Mösern or the so-called "Brand", a remote farmstead near Telfs. The route then continues via Birkenberg with its delicate baroque church, past the ancient St. George's Church to the centre of Telfs. From there, the Way of St. James leads up to the "Mieming Plateau", also known as the sunny plateau. The soaring mountains of the Mieming Range combined with the impressive Hohe Munde mountain create a panoramic backdrop that is hard to beat in terms of both beauty and dramatic effect. The route continues to the pilgrimage church of Maria Locherboden, which stands on an ancient sacred Celtic site with magnificent views of the Upper Inn Valley. It then leads downhill to Mötz and crosses the River Inn, bringing the pilgrims to the village of Stams, which is home to a Cistercian Abbey and the former pilgrimage church of St John the Baptist. The Way of St James 'Tirol-Allgäu' from Stams to Obsteig

542 M 542 M
15 KM 15 KM

For some years now, there has been a variant route option along the Way of St. James that leads from Stams to Oberstaufen via three alpine passes: Fern Pass, Gaicht Pass and Joch Pass. The first destination for the pilgrims, however, is the Holzleitensattel col on the sunny Mieming Plateau.   The route up to the plateau starts with a hike through the stunning Mötzer Klamm gorge. As the pilgrims make their way through the romantic wilderness, they can enjoy the constant view of Burg Klamm castle up ahead at the end of the mini gorge. From the castle, which is privately owned, hikers’ have the "Mittlere Oberinntal" part of the Upper Inn Valley laid out at their feet. The route continues to Obsteig and from there to the legendary "Arzkasten", which owes its name to the former mining activities carried out in the area. The route then climbs gently up to the Holzleitensattel col, which marks the transition from the sunny Mieming Plateau to the Gurgl Valley, before heading down into the Gurgl Valley and to the start of the ascent up to the Fern Pass. The sunny plateau is a place of exceptional scenic beauty and a destination for many hikers and pilgrims, especially in autumn when the plateau's larch forests are draped in gold. This unique natural attraction draws hikers, nature lovers and pilgrims to the sunny plateau year after year.

The Way of St. James: Ellbögen – Igls/Vill

508 M 508 M
17.2 KM 17.2 KM

As the devout St. James pilgrims coming from Brenner reach Ellbögen, they are welcomed by panoramic views that are truly overwhelming even by Tyrolean standards. The Nordkette mountain range appears like a wall, as if it is trying to protect the city of Innsbruck, home to St. James' Cathedral, in the valley below. The Tyrolean section of The Way of St. James leads from Ellbögen to Innsbruck and partially follows the route of the old Roman road. At the primary school in Patsch, traces of Roman wagons can even still be seen engraved deep into the street. The zealous pilgrims continue past Igls and Vill before reaching the edge of the alpine plateau above Innsbruck, with the city spread out in the valley below. What a sight! You would struggle to find a view of any other state capital that compares to that of the view of Innsbruck from The Way of St. James. The descent down into the city is a pure delight and leads via the Cistercian abbey in Wilten to St. James' Cathedral in the centre of Innsbruck. If you take a closer look at the frescoes in the cathedral, you will see various representations of St James, for example in the form of a silver bust.  A description of this stage can be found here
