SUMMER INN THE CITY

Hot town, summer in the city! Joe Cocker once came to Innsbruck and sang a song that became my soundtrack for the summer. It's a perfect fit: the sun burning down, the bright blue skies, the sidewalk heating up underfoot and the hot air dancing on the copper roofs of the churches – it makes me want to sing out loud. I won't, though, for everyone's sake. Instead I'll leave it here and silently enjoy this spectacular sunny day in Innsbruck. There are plenty of ways to do this – from enjoying the cool air up in the mountains to the cultural events held on midsummer evenings. But at night it's a different world, Joe sings as he pulls out a harmonica on the banks of the Inn. The wide range of options may mean that you need to make some difficult decisions – this small selection of summer ideas will hopefully make the choice a little easier.

LIQUID ALPS

On hot summer days, it's important to stay cool. Water is key and, in Innsbruck, it is never far away thanks to the many drinking fountains in the city centre for people and pets. Our finest mountain spring water flows through these fountains, rich in minerals and crystal clear, straight from the peaks to the fountains. Free and delicious – alpine freshness in liquid form. To drink, bottle up and take with you.

INN’SUMMER

INN’SUMMER

The banks of the River Inn are a wonderful place to enjoy spontaneous city relaxation in summer. The Inn Promenade riverside path has running and walking trails, circular cycle routes, table tennis tables, a slackline park and an Urban Gym, as well as numerous loungers, benches, playgrounds and open spaces where you can rest, relax and enjoy. The area where the Inn flows around a corner between Völs and the airport is a particularly nice spot that is a little out of the way. You can get there by bike, bus, roller skates or on foot. There are lovely bays there on both sides of the river where you can enjoy contained fires (BBQs), sundowners and other river tales (there is also a nudist area towards Zirl). INN'sider tip: On selected sunny days, Bonanza invites you to enjoy electronic music and dancing at sunset between the Inn and the Hauptuni (the old university building on Innrain). For bass-heavy summer evenings by the river – always free and from eight to ten.

Our Walks to Explore

If you follow our ancient glacial artery further downstream and away from the city, you can stroll through the shade of gnarled trees to Innsbruck's Baggersee swimming lake (or ride there on the cycle path). Along the way, an adventure playground or two and the pleasant temperatures at the KI climbing paradise (Innsbruck Climbing Center) may tempt you off course – but the refreshing lake ultimately awaits (admission is even free after 6 pm). If you want to relax a little further off the beaten track, you can visit the nearest alpine lake (Lanser See) in the village of Lans. You can get there by bus or by following the forest trail that leads past Ambras Castle. The Sill Gorge is also only a short walk away from Innsbruck and is a beautiful and shady wilderness for you to explore. Our student tip for everyone: free time tastes even sweeter when everyone else is at work. Plus, most places are less busy on weekdays too, of course.
