Zirl is located ten kilometres west of Innsbruck and offers a wide range of activities. The legendary Martinswand rock face is very close by. This was a popular hunting ground for the famous Emperor Maximilian who once sought shelter in a cave there that is now known as the Emperor Max Grotto. For anyone who doesn't want to go up into the mountains in summer, we recommend the outdoor swimming pool in Zirl, the tennis courts, the mini-golf course and the Inn Cycle Path.

Zirl is also a good starting point for a winter holiday. It is easy to get to the ski slopes, cross-country trails and fun parks at various different ski resorts, including Bergbahnen Oberperfuss on Rangger Köpfl mountain, Axamer Lizum and Kühtai.

Local History & Nativity Scene Museum

Zirl is considered a centre of nativity scene building. The "Heimat- und Krippenmuseum" is home to a nativity scene museum that displays many traditional masterpieces. Decorating the traditional mountain crib scene is a celebrated custom in the town of Zirl. During the Christmas season, the crib is a beautiful nativity scene and during Lent it is transformed into a Passion crib featuring a multitude of carved figures from the Passion of Christ. The Local History Museum also invites visitors on a journey through time: with old tools, equipment, photos, scripts and typical farming & household implements. Highlights include the sketches and drawings by the famous church painter Franz Plattner, whose frescoes can be admired in the Parish Church of the Holy Cross just a few paces away.

The Zachäussingen: UNESCO cultural heritage

Have you heard of the Zachäussingen? This custom involves people gathering to sing the "Zachäuslied" and has been awarded the status of UNESCO intangible cultural heritage for Austria. On the third Sunday in October, the people of Zirl are all up and about in the wee hours of the morning. The church bells ring at 4.30 am and call hundreds of people to gather in front of the church where choirs from Zirl sing the "Zachäuslied" about repentance and remorse. Afterwards, the celebrations start and welcome in the new day in an exuberant fashion – with music, dancing and traditional delicacies. And this has been the same way for about 300 years.

The Martinswand rock face

Today, the Martinswand is a popular climbing hotspot, as is the Ehnbachklamm gorge near Zirl. These climbing destinations are both part of the climbing paradise in the Innsbruck region.
